Re: cup21 :: r3.6

Model Shop was pretty excellent, a summation of the rest of Demy's work set in a brutally sad America. I was more mixed on La Frontera, though I enjoyed the lightly surrealist humor. xDrift

We Are the Flesh is a stunner, one of my favorites of recent years. I knew it'd be tough to beat, and Island Etude was just too low-key to grab me. (Hard to imagine a more different pair of movies!)

Tough matchup - I liked both films a lot, but I'll give the edge to xUnknown since The Escape is a film I'm unlikely to have stumbled across on my own.

Curious if we have enough views for Ken Jacobs (I've seen 13)

Ooh, touch matchup. It's hard for me to vote because it's been a while since I've seen Crazed Fruit - but I recall loving it. I loved The Rickshaw Man too, mostly; I have to admit that there were some narrative elements I didn't much care for, but on the other hand those narrative elements allowed f...

xIntrigue

I'm not totally sold on Southwest (I think it'd be better without a score, for one thing), but it certainly makes striking use of the extreme widescreen aspect ratio. ChickenHawk, on the other hand, is a stark and unflinching piece of work that easily gets my vote.

I did find The Creator of the Jungle quite delightful, but I think xTeens deserves a vote too. While it's generic in some ways, the relationship between the two sisters and the two central performances are compelling.

I've seen very few, but since Les Ordres is one of those, I'll throw in a vote.

5 stars:
A Touch of Zen (King Hu)

4 stars:
Les Ordres (Michel Brault)
Electra, My Love (Miklos Jancso)
Passenger (Michelangelo Antonioni)

3 stars:
Pastoral: To Die in the Country (Shuji Terayama)

Re: cup21 :: r2.6

I didn't dislike La Grande Bouffe , though it didn't live up to the expectations I had, based on always seeing it described as a gastronomical Salo or whatnot. It's no Salo , but still, I do enjoy a good roasting of the bourgeoisie, and I'll watch Philippe Noiret in anything, so xEat takes the cake ...

I don't like everything about Sholay, but I love that it uses the same double-headed coin trick as Only Angels Have Wings, but this time between two male friends. Very Hawksian, in its own way!

Re: cup21 :: r2.5

Any movie that uses the Misa Criolla is already gonna have a leg up on the competition in my book, and the rest of Crates didn't disappoint either. A strange little fillip of a movie - exceedingly languid, despite what you might expect from the frenetic montage at the beginning.

Love the way that the trope of the loner PI who lives with his pet is subverted and turned into something surprising and gentle, and love the unusual camera movement choices in the scenes with Ayesha in particular.
