1975 poll: SCFZ does Cannes
1975 poll: SCFZ does Cannes
To determine how often we at SCFZ think Cannes gets it right.
This poll will award the SCFZ Palme d'Or, a Grand Prix, and two Jury Prizes, to the top four films (respectively).
From the Cannes nominees, listed below, if you want to participate:
--> award to every nominee you've seen a rating from 1 to 5 stars
--> you should assign ratings as follows (do not use your ordinary ratings scale), as best as you can quickly approximate:
5 stars: in the top 10% of Cannes nominees from this decade
4 stars: in the top 30%
3 stars: in the middle
2 stars: in the bottom 30%
1 star: in the bottom 10%
This is the same system as in the Academy Awards poll. I'm encouraging ratings like this so we're not measuring whether generous voters have seen a film, but how a film, in SCFZ's view, ranks against its competition. The nominees are (copy/pasting from this list is preferable to me than typing things up from scratch) :
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (Martin Scorsese)
Aloise (Liliane de Kermadec)
The Amulet of Ogum (Nelson Pereira dos Santos)
Cher Victor (Robin Davis)
Chronicle of the Years of Fire (Mohammed Lakhdar Hamina)
Un Divorce Heureux (Henning Carlsen)
Do You Hear the Dogs Barking? (Francois Reichenbach)
Electra, My Love (Miklos Jancso)
The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (Werner Herzog)
Lenny (Bob Fosse)
Lotte in Weimar (Egon Gunther)
Man Friday (Jack Gold)
Mariken van Nieumeghen (Jos Stelling)
Les Ordres (Michel Brault)
Passenger (Michelangelo Antonioni)
Pastoral: To Die in the Country (Shuji Terayama)
Profumo di Donna (Dino Risi)
Section Speciale (Constantin Costa Gavras)
The Story of Sin (Walerian Borowczyk)
They Fought for Their Country (Sergei Bondarchuk)
A Touch of Zen (King Hu)
Yuppi Du (Adriano Celentano)
Because it might be possible for a film to win with a single 5-star rating in this poll, I'll be adjusting one-vote point totals as follows:
5 --> 4.25
4 --> 3.6
3 --> 3
2 --> 2.4
1 --> 1.75
and in case of any ties, films with more votes will win (on the premise that the rating is more reliable).

it may just be my own ignorance, but when i look back at these older cannes slates, it seems to me a lot of the titles are now lost to history, and i wonder if there are any forgotten gems in there, has anyone seen aloise or yuppi du, say? that's one thing i'll find interesting about these polls

Chroncle Of The Years Of Fire won a Palme d'Or. I'm good with that.
The opposite of 'reify' is... ?

i've compiled the results so far, and while i was expecting for many earlier cannes years, a lot of films wouldn't get any votes, we actually only have even one vote for 11 of the 22 nominees. that would be fine, except we don't even have a vote for the actual palme d'or winner, nor for either of the two director winners (which is probably the equivalent of the jury prize that year, since there was no jury prize). so we have no votes for 3 of the 4 awarded films (chronicle of the years of fire, section speciale, and les ordres). if anyone might be inclined to vote, especially if they've seen any of those three films, that would be great! i'll leave this open until friday or so
i think i'll bump this thread one last time, hoping to find someone who has seen any of these films (and who is willing to cast a vote) :
chronicle of the years of fire (mohammed lakhdar hamina)
section speciale (costa-gavras)
les ordres (michel brault)
and maybe on monday, i'll post results

I've seen very few, but since Les Ordres is one of those, I'll throw in a vote.

i'm surprised we didn't get any votes for the actual palme d'or winner, chronicle of the years of fire, and two of the top four films are films with only one (five-star) vote. i'm not sure if that's an issue with the scoring system; i wanted it to be possible for very underseen films to do well, but it should also be true that the results aren't weighted too much towards the opinions of any one person. not sure how to balance those things.
Results
Ten films didn't receive a single vote, so there's at least some chance they would have fared well had they been seen by anyone:
The Amulet of Ogum (Nelson Pereira dos Santos)
Cher Victor (Robin Davis)
Chronicle of the Years of Fire (Mohammed Lakhdar Hamina)
Un Divorce Heureux (Henning Carlsen)
Do You Hear the Dogs Barking? (Francois Reichenbach)
Man Friday (Jack Gold)
Mariken van Nieumeghen (Jos Stelling)
Section Speciale (Constantin Costa Gavras)
They Fought for Their Country (Sergei Bondarchuk)
Yuppi Du (Adriano Celentano)
SCFZ awards the...

and SCFZ awards the...
1975 Palme d'Or to
A Touch of Zen (King Hu) - 4.50

The remaining films, in order of finish:
The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (Werner Herzog) - 3.67
Les Ordres (Michel Brault) - 3.60
Pastoral: To Die in the Country (Shuji Terayama) - 3.25
Electra, My Love (Miklos Jancso) - 3.0
Lenny (Bob Fosse) - 3.0
Profumo di Donna (Dino Risi) - 3.0
Aloise (Liliane de Kermadec) - 2.4
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (Martin Scorsese) - 2.0
The Amulet of Ogum (Nelson Pereira dos Santos) - N/A (4.0 on letterboxd)
Section Speciale (Constantin Costa Gavras) - N/A (3.6 on letterboxd)
They Fought for Their Country (Sergei Bondarchuk) - N/A (3.6 on letterboxd)

Cher Victor (Robin Davis) - N/A (2.0 on letterboxd)
Un Divorce Heureux (Henning Carlsen) - N/A (1.7 on letterboxd)
Of the actual winners in 1975, two didn't get even a vote in our poll (the Palme d'Or winner Chronicle of the Years of Fire and one of the two Best Director winners Section Speciale). The other two finished 5th (The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser, the actual Grand Prix winner) and 6th (Les Ordres, the other Best Director winner) in our poll, so just missed out on winning one of our alternative Cannes awards. No Jury Prize was awarded in 1975, so I've used the Best Director award as a substitute.
So our awards actually don't overlap at all with the real life awards.
