Re: what are you reading?
THE EASY MAN (1968) by Catherine Breillat.
So far, one hell of a difficult read. I'm 40 pages in, and this is way more challenging than reading Blanchot... I think I'll start once more, and re-read everything. If it wasn't Breillat, I would have probably givn up and put it down already.

Wow, Moon in the Gutter!! I love that film!
Wonderful, one of the best and most complex "surreal" films of the 80s.
Films like this is why I love cinema.
Haven't seen the Ford, so can't vote. :icon_e_wink:

Re: SCFZ poll: Stanley Kubrick
But Kubrick and his films also have much humor and irony and are extremely self-reflexive. I guess, when people aren't as stuck-up anymore and appreciate the absurdity and mocking humor in Kubrick more than they do now (and learn not to take the human species too seriously - same as Kubrick's films)...

Just finished a Machida and a Dazai. The Machida was great. The Dazai not so.
Next in line: Snow Country by Kawabata.

Re: 21st Century v 20th Century Films
Yeah, I meant both. I think science is/can be very useful, also art (not really sure about religion, which I believe is basically useless, and an unnecessary dead end in human history). Both study, construct and interpret our (human) world, obviously, but the ideas of "correspondence to reality...

Yah, more or less bullshit. Greg explained art (and art's appeal) much better and more precise with "the irresolvable tension from contradictory things being simultaneously true being a key example of art's power". Can you list some films that provide good examples of contradictory things...

How's the Tanizaki going, kanafani? I’m only 80 pages in, but so far so great. Promises to be one of those great novels about the eclipse of a family and an era. I saw the movie recently so I’m curious on how that will hold up. I will report back when i’ve Made sufficient progress. :dope: :kisscheek:

Today the best was some Concertos by Vivaldi, conducted by Jean-Claude Malgoire.
I also listened to Side A of the album Magic Fly by Space and half of the wonderful Diva score by Vladimir Cosma.

Re: 21st Century v 20th Century Films
I think the cherry picking argument is based on one or more of the following false premises that are largely unexamined: 1)that things continue to progress just 'because' (i.e changes in technology, knowledge etc will produce superior results over time); 2)there is no such thing as regress, only pr...

Re: 21st Century v 20th Century Films
Of course one can cherry-pick films and filmmakers from the 21st century, and thus get the impression that all is well, and there are many great filmmakers shooting many great films in our time (which is true). But this is just the shiny tip of a rotting iceberg, or better speaking: the iceberg has...
