Fantastic director! Loathed him as a budding cinephile but fell in love with his mastery a decade later.
Only seen silents from DeMille so far.
01. Carmen (1915)
02. The Whispering Chorus (1918)
DeMille seen: 5
-----
Wellman: 8
Losey: 2
Lewis: 1

To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence.

we have three people with 7 lewis seen, and two with 8... if two of the 7-seen watch one more before friday, we'll be able to do a lewis poll now. if not, then i'm sure we'll be able to do him a bit later, and we'll go with losey.

We never did Preminger, right? He seems such a perfect fit.
no, we haven't done preminger - still lots of very famous older english-language directors we haven't got to yet, among them otto preminger, william wellman, edward dmytryk, preston sturges, john sturges, henry hathaway, robert wise, george stevens, george cukor, joseph mankiewicz, robert siodmak, phil karlson, hugo fregonese, henry koster, anatole litvak, joseph h lewis, john farrow, mitchell leisen, robert florey, lewis milestone, rouben mamoulian, delmer daves, rudolph mate, david lean, john huston... and even billy wilder.
and joseph losey, but we'll fix that today.
and joseph losey, but we'll fix that today.
Interesting tendency given the amount of obscure and fairly non-prolific director's we've polled. I suppose Preminger isn't an omission or anomaly at all then.
I think people have been purposefully trying somewhat to keep it from being too US centric. At least I know I have and suspect others want to see some love for favorites from elsewhere.
bit of a strange poll, very few films even got to 5 points, so i guess there was a lot of agreement about demille's best films, and no agreement beyond that. i'll still accept late ballots posted today, especially because i'd like to break the 7-way tie for 10th place:
