1998 Poll 2.0

Post by Evelyn Library P.I. »

Choose your favourite films from 1998 (according to IMDB).

Each person can vote for up to 20 films. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number.

Twenty-film ballots can be formatted as follows:
- Five tiers of four films each, 4/4/4/4/4; scored 5-4-3-2-1 pts/film/tier
- Four tiers of five films each, 5/5/5/5; scored 4.5-3.5-2.5-1.5 pts/film/tier
- Two tiers of ten films each, 10/10; scored 4-2 pts/film/tier
- No tiers, unranked; scored 3 pts/film
- A 20-film three-tier ballot is not possible

A tiered ballot can include less than 20 films, but in that case the total number of films must still be able to be factored by the number of tiers, so:
- A five tier ballot can include only 20, 15, 10, or 5 films
- A four tier ballot can include only 20, 16, 12, 8, or 4 films
- A three tier ballot (scored 5-3-1) can include only 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, or 3 films
- A two tier ballot can include only 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, or 2 films
- Ballots that are 19, 17, 13, 11, 7 or 1 films must be no tiers

Users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible, so that others can use them for recommendations. You may revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline.

Deadline for 1998 ballots will be Monday, July 31st at roughly midnight EDT.

histoires du cinema is the lousiest "art film" joke i've ever seen, aside from those dirtbags strobhillets' minimalist masterpieces - easy to see why godard and the strobs were so fond of each other. got through two episodes until the mumbling narcissistic third-rate intellectual of that great over-hyped french movement with his scratchy-video-of-me-smoking-and-talking-to-myself + chaplin clips + holocaust footage + pornography = genius filled me with such violent loathing that i had to reach for the nearby pail to retch. maybe it gets better later?

but the year wasn't a total bust:

flowers of shanghai (hou)
silence (makhmalbaf)
the apple (makhmalbaf)
spring in my hometown (lee)
the common people (zhou)
dr. akagi (imamura)
the power of kangwon province (hong)
pear tree (mehrjui)
my name is joe (loach)
cabaret balkan (paskaljevic)
the outskirts (lutsik)
rushmore (anderson)
dialogues with solzhenitsyn aka the knot (sokurov)
the hole (tsai)
terminus paradis (pintilie)
flight of the bee (min & usmonov)
central station (salles)
rostov-luanda (sissoko)
the way we laughed (amelio)
siberian lesson (staron)
the thin red line (malick)

if i see no others, that's the final.

i have it from you from before! but i left it so long without watching it for your dtc nominations that the guilt of not watching it grew to be the obstacle to watching it......hopefully the year poll angle will neutralise this neurotic tendency and i'll actually get around to watching it. on the other hand now that i've formally announced my previous failure and new intention, this may itself prove to be another insurmountable obstacle (i've formulated the theory over the years that by the time my calcified brain has got around to verbalising anything, the thing that prompted it is already over, gone....i love you actually only ever means i loved you etc, funereal utterances, tongue as tombstone...by the time i say 'i will' the window for action closed an age ago)....anyway....we'll see! :D

Once hyped by Tony Rayns as the great hope of Chinese film, oft-censored Zhou Xiaowen made a strange but kinda terrific movie this year that only 11 people have seen on Letterboxd:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZgWMkw3ths

There used to be HD copies of this on Youtube, but they're gone now. KG has a good rip.

a tough film to watch. handicapped people don't get enough representation. how come i assumed that healthcare was free in communist china? instead it seems possibly even worse than the US, where at the very least they can't throw you out of the emergency room. outrageous in any case.

what i really like is - it's foreshadowing the chinese documentary movement - a realistic documentary style about an unexpected subject - in a (hybrid) fiction film. see also xiao wu (1997)... an underrecognized director for sure. THX KARL

i remember enjoying the director's 1994 films as well and i will make a spot for this one
