1984 Poll 2.0

Post by Evelyn Library P.I. »

Choose your favourite films from 1984 (according to IMDB).

Each person can vote for up to 20 films. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number.

Twenty-film ballots can be formatted as follows:
- Five tiers of four films each, 4/4/4/4/4; scored 5-4-3-2-1 pts/film/tier
- Four tiers of five films each, 5/5/5/5; scored 4.5-3.5-2.5-1.5 pts/film/tier
- Two tiers of ten films each, 10/10; scored 4-2 pts/film/tier
- No tiers, unranked; scored 3 pts/film
- A 20-film three-tier ballot is not possible

A tiered ballot can include less than 20 films, but in that case the total number of films must still be able to be factored by the number of tiers, so:
- A five tier ballot can include only 20, 15, 10, or 5 films
- A four tier ballot can include only 20, 16, 12, 8, or 4 films
- A three tier ballot (scored 5-3-1) can include only 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, or 3 films
- A two tier ballot can include only 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, or 2 films
- Ballots that are 19, 17, 13, 11, 7 or 1 films must be no tiers

Users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible, so that others can use them for recommendations. You may revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline.

Deadline for 1984 ballots will be Wednesday, July 31st at around midnight EDT.

Irena Gosmanová alias Pigi, born 1960 in Prague.
In the 1970s, she was expelled from her studies at the grammar school due to accusations of distributing illegal publications. In 1979, together with Čaroděj OZ (Wizard of OZ, Lubomír Drožď), she went to Ždírec in the Kokořín region, where she worked in menial jobs, later as a map draftsman for the Czech Geological Institute. In the 1990s, she briefly supported herself by creating art, currently, she works as an artistic gilder - restorer. Her film work began in the early 1980s in parallel with other creators of the informal film group around the Wizard of OZ (Karra, Pablo De Sax). A significant impetus for it was the relatively unlimited access to the Super 8 Quartz camera, which the group purchased for itself. A para-documentary position is typical for her films. It is based on an amateur approach to filming, captures authentic situations, which it combines with acted scenes, or places stylized characters in a directly real environment. In terms of genre, her films are straddled between grotesques, documentaries, video clips, comic horrors and essays. Thematically, it is based on the everyday experience of late socialism, it captures social and family rituals, public celebrations, amusement parks, or spending free time in general. Their female protagonists are typical underground film characters: strong and independent characters in a hopeless conflict with the surrounding society. In her case, it is almost exclusively female heroes who are the source of chaos leading to a tragic conclusion, or comic escapades. Pigi made twelve films between 1982 and 1986, which at the time of their creation were shown to a limited audience at underground shows and festivals. After 1989, they partially fell into oblivion and were shown again after their digital reconstruction at the Center for Audiovisual Studies of the Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague in 2015–2017. This is one incredible year!! (Also the year of my birth ^^)

Looking on my old letterboxd list, I already have 30 masterpieces listed: https://letterboxd.com/wba/list/1984-1/

This will be very defficult to narrow down to a mere 20...

Thanks for headsup on Lapshin, Trotsky. I'll replace it with somethin.

Lots I'd like to see this year - though I thought the same about the previous few years and all this international-transfer business of late has kept me from seeing much of anything except for something a coupla weeks back that a friend insisted I watch called What Is a Woman? where a bearded chap goes round asking the title question to people who have trouble answering it (the motherland, she just gets crazier and crazier): A Romance in Philately, The Runner, Terence Davies Trilogy, Kaos, Kindergarten, The Four Seasons, Alias Baby Tsina, Dead Souls (if I can stand those Mosfilm Youtube subtitles!), On the Hunting Ground, the two Wu Tian-ming films, I Love Mary (Hou Hsiao-hsien attempting to speak English!), Man of Principle, Leila and the Wolves, Dreams of the City, Ruth, Dangerous Charm, list goes on and on. And what the hell's wrong with the response system on this site these days?

Oh, hey, Trotsky, I've just now noticed that Marlen Khutsiyev's EPILOGUE and Tengiz Abuladze's REPENTANCE are 1984 on IMDb, if not on Letterboxd, so I'll slap both those on the final and nix Lapshin and Up in the Cherry Tree (which is cute, but no great shakes).

experiments in film by brian connelly

there's very little non-professional home movie stuff on bfi for 1984 (guess at this point everyone was just saving up the footage to catch bloopers and send them into the tv clip shows) so guess this'll have to do

FEELINGS (Todd Solondz)
A sensitive youth despairs, as he cannot endure life without his beloved.
This short film, Feelings (1984), is a strange look into the life of a youth who cannot live without his beloved, so he chooses suicide to escape the pain. Jan Meredith plays himself–an estranged teen who walks a nearby beach to seek respite from his lover’s departure. The song “Feelings” plays eerily in the background. Feelings is the story of this teen trying to deal with sadness. As he sings, “Woah, oh, oh feelings,” he tries to express his emotions through drawings, songs, and reflection. He draws a frowning face in the sand and stares longingly at the water. His final stop is on the edge of the rocks at the shoreline. After jumping, a woman rushes over to see if she can save him, but it’s too late. The film’s closing image is Jan Meredith in an angel costume, indicating that the boy has killed himself.
however, according to the other source it is Todd who kills himself (not Jan)...
(oh, the world of cinema is so complex and the tender feelings are so confusing!)
Feelings is a two and a half minute movie made as an NYU film school assignment in 1984. Solondz himself takes the lead role of a sensitive young man who finds he can no longer endure life without his beloved (Jan Meredith).

Ack, just noticed that Mukhamukham (Face to Face) by Adoor Gopalakrishnan is 1985 on IMDb.

But there's this, from Hong Kong:

and this, one from Soviet Azerbaijan (which are uncommonly subtitled):

YES! WINDOW MOVIE! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!

bruits d'images aux fenêtres d'osmin - jakobois

well, either it's a window movie or an epileptic fit. either way, notably correct use of birds.

thanks greennui for link: https://lightcone.org/en/film-747-bruit ... es-d-osmin

due to the nature of the film screenshots are some kind of anathema of representation - i'd be better off posting any random image found in the outer world than those precisely excised from the jakobois creation, but i'm not feeling google-y enough tonight so:
