2009 Poll 2.0

Post by Evelyn Library P.I. »

Choose your favourite films from 2009 (according to IMDB).

Each person can vote for up to 20 films. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number.

Twenty-film ballots can be formatted as follows:
- Five tiers of four films each, 4/4/4/4/4; scored 5-4-3-2-1 pts/film/tier
- Four tiers of five films each, 5/5/5/5; scored 4.5-3.5-2.5-1.5 pts/film/tier
- Two tiers of ten films each, 10/10; scored 4-2 pts/film/tier
- No tiers, unranked; scored 3 pts/film
- A 20-film three-tier ballot is not possible

A tiered ballot can include less than 20 films, but in that case the total number of films must still be able to be factored by the number of tiers, so:
- A five tier ballot can include only 20, 15, 10, or 5 films
- A four tier ballot can include only 20, 16, 12, 8, or 4 films
- A three tier ballot (scored 5-3-1) can include only 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, or 3 films
- A two tier ballot can include only 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, or 2 films
- Ballots that are 19, 17, 13, 11, 7 or 1 films must be no tiers

Users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible, so that others can use them for recommendations. You may revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline. Ballots posted by new members who have not participated in other parts of the forum are welcome, but they will be considered on a case-by-case basis and are not guaranteed inclusion on the final list.

Deadline for 2009 lists will be Thursday, March 31st at around midnight EDT.

there are directors i wouldn't usually vote for in these polls (tarantino, wes anderson, haneke, even post-70s herzog) who to me made their best films (or top two or three) in this year. it's funny, if i made a watchlist for this year, a lot of it would include sally's ballot above -- i haven't seen even one of those films, though i've been meaning to watch a lot of them, so maybe i'd replace almost my entire ballot if i saw them all. we'll see what i have time for!

The White Meadows (Mohammad Rasoulof)
Punching the Clown (Gregori Viens)
Frontier Blues (Babak Jalali)
City Island (Raymond De Felitta)

In the Loop (Armando Iannucci)
A Perfect Getaway (David Twohy)
Hadewijch (Bruno Dumont)

Navidad (Sebastian Lelio)
Inglorious Basterds (Quentin Tarantino)

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call (Werner Herzog)
A Prophet (Jacques Audiard)
Fantastic Mr Fox (Wes Anderson)

Sooooo many films that I watched at the time that I can't remember/be sure of that I would still like due to gestation. Like, I remember feeling rather enthusiastic about A Prophet, wouldn't know now though.

It's Complicated (Nancy Meyers)
The Princess and the Frog (Ron Clements, John Musker)
Confessions of a Shopaholic (P.J. Hogan)

As usual in years like this, voting for 3 movies that resemble romance novels is all I kind sincerely offer. I don't always bother to vote in a year like this (given my paucity of votes and my lack of cinephilically acceptable taste), but I can't resist the urge to throw a slurve now and again.

glad to see a vote for this, a rare bright spot in one of the worst ever years for american romantic comedies (the ugly truth may be one of the absolute nadirs of the tradition.

i have become increasingly fond of the first love aaj kaal and ajab prem ki ghazab kahaani though, and of course the mouret (though that one is more of a farce, as is apkgk i guess)...

Ah, splendid! As I recall, the guy she falls in love with is the most boring cardboard cutout standee ever, but one's crush on Isla Fisher + fashion delights make it enjoyable.

Not a year I know much about, but I'll endorse these:

La Mitad Del Mundo - Jaime Ruiz Ibáñez
Bala Mordida - Diego Muñoz

and maybe

Corazon Del Tiempo - Alberto Cortés

Not sure if that last one holds up. I know there's a subbed copy of la Mitad... online somewhere.
The opposite of 'reify' is... ?

^hey ho jiri, baffled on the new name, which bit is the egg bit?

started my 2009 viewing proper with two nice films:

eric baudelaire's the makes - a fake documentary about antonioni's japanese period, right up my street/void...

and then the 16mm b&w manila (raya martin, adolfo alix jr.) - echoes of past filipino cinema and glimpses of the future all whirling around a study of the city....(btw what happened to filipino cinema, it was brave new bright thing for a while and seems to have fizzled out?)

also featuring fantastically cute main actor

"holdrüholoheuho" carries no meaning whatsoever — it is purely onomatopoetic.
i appropriated it from a subtitle of some 1920s/1930s? bergfilm? (i just remember a lot of skiing — not the title).
and that particular subtitle accompanied some yodeling (or alike — can't recall clearly anymore).

ah good, i've just been making idiotic mouth movements at the screen trying to say it, i'm not gonna start yodelling at my neighbours at 23:45 at night....

and greennui, dunno if we want to start arguing with imdb/letterboxd for such recent year polls but just noting here in case i forgot - manuel mozos' ruínas (the most pornographic of ruin porn anyone could possibly want) is 2009 on imdb but 2010 on lboxd
