1972 Poll 2.0
Choose your favourite films from 1972 (according to IMDB).
Each person can vote for up to 20 films. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number.
Twenty-film ballots can be formatted as follows:
- Five tiers of four films each, 4/4/4/4/4; scored 5-4-3-2-1 pts/film/tier
- Four tiers of five films each, 5/5/5/5; scored 4.5-3.5-2.5-1.5 pts/film/tier
- Two tiers of ten films each, 10/10; scored 4-2 pts/film/tier
- No tiers, unranked; scored 3 pts/film
- A 20-film three-tier ballot is not possible
A tiered ballot can include less than 20 films, but in that case the total number of films must still be able to be factored by the number of tiers, so:
- A five tier ballot can include only 20, 15, 10, or 5 films
- A four tier ballot can include only 20, 16, 12, 8, or 4 films
- A three tier ballot (scored 5-3-1) can include only 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, or 3 films
- A two tier ballot can include only 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, or 2 films
- Ballots that are 19, 17, 13, 11, 7 or 1 films must be no tiers
Users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible, so that others can use them for recommendations. You may revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline. Ballots posted by new members who have not participated in other parts of the forum are welcome, but they will be considered on a case-by-case basis and are not guaranteed inclusion on the final list.
Deadline for 1972 lists will be Monday, February 28th at around midnight EST.

Have a look at all the picnics of the intellect: These conceptions! These discoveries! Perspectives! Subtleties! Publications! Congresses! Discussions! Institutes! Universities! Yet: one senses nothing but stupidity. - Gombrowicz, Diary

I never make gifs but I made one years ago in answer to the last comment on this review:
https://letterboxd.com/filipe_furtado/f ... -together/
But I never posted it for some reason. Was gonna post it again in reply to a post Lencho made that I can't remember now but he deleted it before I could post it. So, now I'm finally posting something that took 15 minutes of my life to make:
lol can't seem to embed it so:

Undoubtedly the best film in the Four Seasons cycle, and so incredibly different from the others. While it could be accused of being a gimmick, with a fairly basic premise/progression, the way it works with cinematic form is just incredible - not to mention Lonsdale and his co-star has great chemistry.
the 70s were such a strange time... i really really really enjoyed l'eta di cosimo medici. it's quite didactic, like something on pbs - and i read rossellini had hoped to get it on pbs. i wish he'd managed, i might have then seen it as a child. pbs was my main source of culture in the suburbs - that and vogue magazine naive backdrops speaking to budget limitations are completely charming; also how are there still so many great renaissance faces in the general pop

I have to put in a good word for Female Prisoner Scorpion, Jailhouse 41, even with the distressing rape content. Pinku de Sade/surrealism AND a Christian allegory.
The opposite of 'reify' is... ?
slap the monster on page one - gian maria volonte doesn't disappoint but the film has lost some edge in the trump era. a right wing newspaper frames a leftist for a rape/murder in order to smear them pre-election and also distract from the corruption of a right-wing financier. fox news would pull this shit in a heartbeat (see the murder of seth rich)
i do love this era of antifacist italian cinema; it's absolutely thrilling
oh no! gerhard roth has died! LOVE his 1972 novel the autobiography of albert einstein
i can't watch movies at the minute, i made a clearly very bad omelette two days ago and still can't move too far away from the bathroom...

giallo is not one of my genres but i'm trying to give it more of a chance. your vice is a locked room and only i have the key!! a cat steals the picture! my kinda movie
and fulci's don't torture a duckling. this was probably the height of the giallo era. both of these were rather good (and no ducklings were tortured)
sleaze and laughable effects comes with the territory. in a weaker year, maybe... il caso mattei up next

i did a giallo challenge a few years ago and don't torture a duckling was the only true giallo that i ranked very highly (out of 52 watched). but then, i'm not a giallo fan either so no surprise

There was an ill-natured black cat in the '72-Italy adaptation of The Master And Margarita too... but I think it was a shorthair, so prob. not the same. Still, 72's quite a year for cats. Even Charles Bronson had one in The Mechanic, iirc. Watched Your Vice Is A Windstorm And I Have A Leafblower last night -- palpable ickiness and not much else. One other giallo I'm pretty sure of getting to this month is The Red Queen Kills Seven Times, and that might be it for the year, though I've decided I need to see 71's Bay Of Blood sooner than I expected.
Jack's Wife by Romero! It looks and sounds like a Pittsburgh PBS filmcrew documenting a community theatre production, but the script has a massive that-wave-fem vibe, outclasses in that respect everything I've seen from male filmmakers. Romero's wife, Nancy R. , is in the credits in some capacity; I'm thinking she had a lot! to do with shaping the content.
Oh, yeah, AKA "Hungry Wives" and "Season Of The Witch."

Also, if anybody who's equipped to watch Mecanica Nacional w/o subtitles wants to play swaps with me, I'll watch whatever your thing is in exchange. Warning, though, it's dialogue-heavy a la Altman, and it goes as fast as Hawks...

I really need to see what was called Season of the Witch when I watched it again. I saw it so long ago that the memory is too hazy to rely much on and I was still just a pup, so my impressions were raw rather than filed away by concept or name, but the impression was a strongly positive one at the time, but allowed to get mixed in with other Romero thoughts and confused a bit over time too I think. (If that makes sense.)

Funny anecdote about watching Your Vice Is A Mimsy And I Have The Borogoves; at some point about halfway, he was chasing her around the mansion and I started getting a The Shining vibe, to the point where I thought I was going to take the easy way out on LB and just post "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" ... and then five minutes later came that reveal in the library.
