Thus i recommend you to watch more Norman Jewison.:) He has created one of the best drama about poker players: The Cincinnati Kid (1965) with Steve McQueen and Edward G. Robinson as typicall young player vs typicall old game wolf.
I also like many of his films he made in different periods, which fit well on those different periods. Adaptations of Fiddler on the Roof and Jesus Christ Superstar (1973). His crime, mystery movie In the Heat of the Night (1967) is one of the best in it`s genre for me, also about racial tension in USA small town. Rollerball (1975)-great dystopia, The Thomas Crown Affair (1968)-just a very pretty movie and i can name many other famous films.
But your post decided Don Siegel fate:) Good news . I`m sure Don Siegel deserves our attention. My two previous candidates -Yates and Jewison are very solid cinema profesionalls. They made big famous pictures. Don Siegel is closer to what critics call film d'auteur

A shame! Just watched it and I'd call it one of his best. A picaresque tale of nationalism taken to its absurdist extreme, anchored by the driest of humour, a fully committed performance from Ken Ogata and a classic Imamura ending that underscores how pitiful and tragic the whole story is. A surprisingly underseen gem.
