i won't tally anything until everyone who wants to participate has had a chance to post a ballot, so don't feel rushed! it wouldn't really feel like a proper scfz list if you or kanafani didn't get a ballot in, so i'm happy to push back any (as yet non-existent) deadline if that means you'll both make a ballot.

and brian d posted an all-silent list and greg x posted an all-21st century list?! interesting...

I really wanted to include it, but couldn't make up my mind which film's got to move out to give it spot. So it's my #56 for sure.

Yeah, I liked it a lot and almost chose it, but there were a couple scenes that tipped the favor to L'iceberg instead. I've liked all their movies to varying degrees, The Fairy probably least, but L'iceberg seemed the most consistent.

Our Little Sister isn't a movie that jumps out at you, but it maintains a tone that lingers long after seeing it for its more subtle attributes.

am working on this but will likely need till july 4th weekend to come up with something. it'll still be highly arbitrary and unscientific.

that sounds great! no rush, i'll wait until you post a ballot before i start tallying.

if anyone else is planning to post a ballot, let me know, so i don't start tabulating without including it. and i wonder if any of the former scfz regulars might be encouraged to post here (james, twodeadmagpies, mpenalosa, etc) since they were so central to our community not too long ago?

So for this year I wanted to do something a little different. Whenever I’ve made 'top film' lists in the past, I’ve always been partially dissatisfied because my lists ends up being filled with films I haven’t seen in years and sometimes don’t remember as clearly as I’d like to remember them. For this reason, I’m trying out an experiment and only selecting films for which I have written capsules and thus have a slightly easier time recalling them. These aren’t all necessarily the first films to jump to my mind when making a ‘favorites’ list, but I like the idea of this list not only providing a snapshot into what films I’m most interested in at this time, but also how those interests are reflected in my writing. The results are a bit odd, in large part because I don’t tend to write notes on most canonical films I see (there’s already so much written about them so it’s more difficult to find something to say), however I’m hopeful that this list will motivate me to revisit other favorites over the coming year and put my thoughts on them into words.

thanks for the ballot!

i haven't heard from anyone who is still planning to post a ballot, so i might start tallying this very soon. i can accept new ballots while i'm tallying, but if you're planning to post a ballot, please let me know in this thread so i don't post the results without including it. and if you might be planning to edit a ballot you posted already, please also let me know, so i can save tallying it for last.

and lastly, if anyone is in touch with scfz ex-pats and can encourage them to stop by to post a top 50 or top 55, that would be cool! just let me know if it seems likely a new ballot will come in.

i noticed there aren't ballots from karl, mesnalty, patrick, josiah, and other scfz regulars, and even if they don't plan to post a ballot, i think i'll leave this open another seven days just in case they change their minds. pabs also has posted only a partial ballot that i hope he'll extend.

still, anyone planning to edit or post a new ballot, please let me know here.

I find the idea of thinking of a top 50 too overwhelming, so no ballot from me this time. Maybe next year!

Really like this idea! Produces a very interesting list too. And I definitely relate: I find it easier to recall a film when I've written a capsule for it; and I usually find it much harder to write about movies that are already well-established as canonical.

Thanks! It also made it easier to select films since I had fewer to choose from (definitely a welcome change of pace in that regard). The variance from my previous 'favorites' lists feels somewhat refreshing too, sort of providing a way to rethink how I usually approach choosing favorites.

Flip, the problem with me is that, although I see plenty of satisfying films every year, I rarely see even one that's so good that I'm bowled over. It's not often I'll give a film a 4, let alone a 4.5. A solid gold 5/5 is like a once every five years event, judging by my last 10 years of film-watching. So I think I need at least two years before I can make a new ballot again. I need time to see many more films, which is the only way I'll have fresh titles to choose from to add to my ballot. If I don't get to see more great films, my ballot will stay pretty much the same.

I've seen tons of films in the past year that I thought were "good", but far fewer were those I considered "very good" and only a single one of them was what I'd call "great"- at least, compared to the top 50 I compiled last year. So if I complete a list for this year (which I think I still will), it'll only be slight tinkering around the edges, just a nudge here and there, but essentially mostly the same titles coughed up again.

Maybe we should conduct these polls only every two or three years.
