Best of 2024 Poll!
Best of 2024 Poll!
SCFZ Best of 2024
I'm starting up our annual best of the year poll, where we poll our favourite films released last year:
• post a list of your favourite films from 2024
-- you can list no more than half of the 2024 films you have seen, up to a maximum of 10, except:
--- if you have seen between 40 and 59 feature films from last year: then you can list up to 11 films
--- if you have seen 60 or more feature films from last year: then you can list up to 12 films
• ranked ballots are *strongly* encouraged (if you aren't sure how to rank, maybe rank in reverse-order of letterboxd views, to give more weight to films less likely to get other votes). Unless you tell me otherwise, I'll assume your ballot is ranked.
• scoring for ranked ballots will be on the usual 1-2-3-4-...-max scale (so a three-film ranked ballot will award 3, 2 and 1 points to the three films)
• unranked ballots will award the same total points as a ranked one would, but awarding an equal number of points to each film. So a ten-film unranked ballot, say, will award 5.5 points per film
• feel free to post a ballot now and edit it later - no need to let me know about changes unless you make changes on the day of the deadline, which is just before Oscars night. As usual, I'll post the results on Academy Award day, which is March 2 this year
• voters can decide which films are eligible for the poll -- anything released in 2024 is clearly eligible, as are any 2023 festival releases that weren't available for most people to watch until 2024. that said, any film that received support in our best of 2023 poll (https://letterboxd.com/fliptrotsky/list ... scfz-poll/) is not eligible for the 2024 poll
deadline: March 1, 2023 at noon ET
I'll start the never-very-popular Academy Awards poll in a separate thread, nominations were announced today

seen over +80 2024 films so far and I think I'll see up to 100 before the deadline.
still a lot of movies I haven't seen yet, but not many of them will be available before the deadline(Grand Tour releases in March, etc...) I think this will actually be the final list.
Of course, if there's anything more to add, it could change..
edit : seen 95 (missed : A Different Man, Grand Tour, Hard Truths, Megalopolis, Souleymane’s Story, etc...)
two 2023 movies included (these are not mentioned at 2023 poll)
Juror #2
The Beast (2023 stuff)
All We Imagine as Light
By the Stream
Youth (Hard Times)
The Voices of the Silenced (2023 stuff)
Chime
Misericordia
All the Long Nights
Caught By the Tides
No Other Land

also recommandable (alphabetical order)

Daughters
The Diary of a Sky

The Invisible Zoo
Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In
Youth (Homecoming)

welcome back! as long as there's a good reason to count all of the 2022-2023 premieres as "2024 films", then the ballot looks perfect.connordenney wrote: ↑Thu Jan 30, 2025 5:22 pm First time posting on this forum in a very long time, so let me know if I'm doing anything wrong here!

Seen 55. Will try to watch 60 before the due date. I'll add italics to the films that only had festival releases until 2024 in case they are ineligible. I'm not sure about Hundreds of Beavers because it started having festival releases at 2022. I'll leave it out of the list for now.
EDIT: Now it's over 60 so it'll be 12 films. Spoilered is the old list:
UPDATED LIST:
1. Souleymane's Story - Boris Lojkine
2. Fatal Fixer Upper - David DeCoteau
3. The Primevals - David Allen
4. Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat - Johan Grimonprez
5. Better Man - Michael Gracey
6. The Apprentice - Ali Abbasi
7. Chime - Kiyoshi Kurosawa
8. Bramayugam - Rahul Sadasivan
9. The Substance - Coralie Fargeat
10. Anora - Sean Baker
11. Rumours - Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, & Galen Johnson
12. Local Legends: Bloodbath! - Matt Farley

This was my list at 74 films in:
I passed 100 this weekend, and there's been some big shake-ups. What a year! The top 12 are currently all favourites. I'd say 2024 is undoubtedly the strongest year of the 2020s so far.
Here's the 12 I can give points to:
1. All We Imagine as Light (2024, Payal Kapadia)
2. Three Kilometres to the End of the World (2024, Emanuel Pârvu)
3. Nickel Boys (2024, RaMell Ross)

9. A Real Pain (2024, Jesse Eisenberg)
10. Bird (2024, Andrea Arnold)
11. Sex (2024, Dag Johan Haugerud)
12. The Apprentice (2024, Ali Abbasi)
Runner ups:
Crossing (2024, Levan Akin)
Keyke mahboobe man / My Favourite Cake (2024, Behtash Sanaeeha, Maryam Moghadam)
Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat (2024, Johan Grimonprez)
Feng liu yi dai / Caught by the Tides (2024, Jia Zhang-ke)

On Becoming a Guinea Fowl (2024, Rungano Nyoni)
Une langue universelle / Universal Language (2024, Matthew Rankin)
Black Box Diaries (2024, Shiori Itô)
I still really need to see I'm Still Here, should hopefully be available to me soon. Other films high on my watchlist are Afternoons of Solitude, Kjærlighet/Love, Drømmer/Dreams, and April.

there is still time to submit or edit a ballot! i am extending the deadline until tomorrow afternoon, around 2pm or 3pm ET
i'll tally this poll as soon as i finish with the oscars poll, so unless someone needs another hour or two, i'll shut this down in about 15 minutes
results in a minute, first a few notes:
• this may be our least conventional end-of-year list, in most past years, one or two best picture nominees figure in the top five, and a lot of very widely seen films finish high in the rankings. this year, only four out of ten best pic nominees even got a vote, and only one made our top ten, which is largely made up of films that did not do massive box office
• some of the films most celebrated by the academy got absolutely no support in our poll: emilia perez, the brutalist, a complete unknown and i'm still here among them
• a full half (11 of 22) of the cannes competition slate made our final list, which is especially impressive when you consider some of those films aren't easily available to see as yet. of those, one finished in second place, and five other cannes films finished in the 11-20 range
• by comparison, six films that premiered in venice and only two that premiered in berlin made our final list
• 81 films in total got at least one vote, and since we usually post a top 100, i might ask for additional nominations soon, or i might just post a top 75 this year
• ties were broken in reverse-order of letterboxd views

yes, let's try to get to a top 100, if anyone saw other 2024 films that did not make our list, but which are worthwhile, just post a list, ranked, of any length, in this thread, and i'll pick the #1 from each list first, then the #2 from each, etc, and break ties by letterboxd views, until we fill out a top 100
my list:
Casa en Flames (Dani de la Orden)
Liminal Girl (Richard Story)
One More Shot (James Nunn)
and that's about all i'm willing to vote for, so hopefully a few other people will participate!

Did you include my runner ups? Happy to extend it as well, such an amazing year.
i was planning to, if you didn't post here -- from your runners-up, only two films didn't make the top 81 so far, so at the moment, your bonus ballot would look like this:St. Gloede wrote: ↑Mon Mar 03, 2025 6:31 pm Did you include my runner ups? Happy to extend it as well, such an amazing year.
On Becoming a Guinea Fowl (2024, Rungano Nyoni)
Black Box Diaries (2024, Shiori Itô)
but feel free to extend (or reorder) it, we have enough ballots that i won't be able to use more than 5 films in total from anyone (and probably only 4), but you could add two or three more!
i think i'll wait until the end of tomorrow for bonus ballots, so people have about 30 hours to post if they want to
