the wife of an important man d. mohamed khan. a fascist police officer can't deal when he's stripped of his office. his long suffering wife is too naive -- when he allows her to resume her college she tells him about all the radical students in a quite lighthearted manner! only to be shunned as an informer... when she leaves him he threatens her family and neighbors until she's 'returned.' *sigh* ofc it ends in the worst possible way. certainly echoes creeping authoritarianism in our own country and the very real possibility that manufacturing evidence could become ordinary police business! but everything seems political to me now lol

Images of the Unconscious (Leon Hirszman, 1987)
https://letterboxd.com/film/images-of-the-unconscious/

documentary about the institution called “Museum of Images of the Unconscious”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museum_of ... nconscious

it is a trilogy.
each segment focuses on a specific person.
so far, i watched the first part called “Fernando Diniz: In Search of Everyday Space”

Fernando Diniz (1918, Aratu, Bahia - 1999, Rio de Janeiro, RJ)

voiceover is slightly ghastly — rooted in some weird petty-bourgeois art theory that is terrified by “chaos” and feels relief when “chaos” transforms into something familiar (a basket full of cherries) ...

... but all the presented paintings (moving freely (back and forth (& vice versa)) between “realistic”, “abstract”, and “surreal”) are wonderful.

If the Sun Never Returns (Claude Goretta)
The residents of a remote Swiss mountain village come to believe an ancient oracle in this drama taken from the novel by Charles Ferdinand Ramuz.
Image

With news of the Spanish Civil War on the radio, the people begin to believe the sun will not return and the world will be forever darkened.

it's happening that this poll viewing goes straight to my poll ballot

Professor Taranne (Raúl Ruiz)

Image
Image
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Adamov

The title character of one of his [Adamov’s] best known works, Le Professeur Taranne (1953), is accused of various things (public nudity, littering, plagiarism), all of which he strenuously denies, only to have his denials turned against him into more evidence of misdemeanours. This particular play was directly influenced by a dream Adamov had.

King of the Children is somehow 1988 now. Good ole Imdb! Well, off it goes, and in its place I'll put the Chinese film no one's seen, for a total of two lady Chinese directors for the year - surely a record for the top twenty. And if the mysterious "U Lan," co-director of Girl from Hunan is a lady (I've been unable to verify the sex of this person or even if he/she exists - Xie Fei is the only listed director in the credits) that'd make an even more remarkable trio of Chinese lady directors. I didn't get around to the big Chinese movies of the year, Hibiscus Town and Old Well. Next time.

Happy New Year, champers.

Under the Sun of Satan (Pialat)
Mother of Kings (Zaorski)
Where Is the Friend's Home? (Kiarostami)
