1952 Poll 2.0

Post by Evelyn Library P.I. »

Choose your favourite films from 1952 (according to IMDB).

Each person can vote for up to 20 films. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number.

Twenty-film ballots can be formatted as follows:
- Five tiers of four films each, 4/4/4/4/4; scored 5-4-3-2-1 pts/film/tier
- Four tiers of five films each, 5/5/5/5; scored 4.5-3.5-2.5-1.5 pts/film/tier
- Two tiers of ten films each, 10/10; scored 4-2 pts/film/tier
- No tiers, unranked; scored 3 pts/film
- A 20-film three-tier ballot is not possible

A tiered ballot can include less than 20 films, but in that case the total number of films must still be able to be factored by the number of tiers, so:
- A five tier ballot can include only 20, 15, 10, or 5 films
- A four tier ballot can include only 20, 16, 12, 8, or 4 films
- A three tier ballot (scored 5-3-1) can include only 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, or 3 films
- A two tier ballot can include only 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, or 2 films
- Ballots that are 19, 17, 13, 11, 7 or 1 films must be no tiers

Users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible, so that others can use them for recommendations. You may revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline.

Deadline for 1952 ballots will be Saturday, September 30th at roughly midnight EDT.

the one on kg has an annoying watermark but it is more than watchable, had it at one point but old hard drive died and still haven't figured out the torrenting kinks in the new apartment. it's frustrating that so much is missing but it's a very interesting movie.

the other two i liked from '52, k.a. abbas (most famous as raj kapoor's screenwriter but an interesting writer/director in his own right) strange dual nargis role melodrama anhonee and mehboob khan's full color ruritanian swashbuckler aan are both on youtube in great prints from the tommydan youtube channel.

aan is a lot of fun, the print is beautiful and dilip kumar reminds me of srk here! great swashbuckling THX NRH and tommydan ♥

i do wish they'd translate song lyrics consistently in these old films but the score is wonderful too

according to imdb this was the first indian film in color and mehboob khan recieved high praise from legendary epic director cecil b demille :D

edit: ok part of the srk thing may be trying to force himself on a woman, in this case a jodhpur wearing princess with a whip :? the story is a hot mess but wow the sets.

k I have to finish the film now :p

AND WTF WITH THE UTTERLY BIZARRE DREAM SEQUENCE  THIS MOVIE HAS THE WEIRDEST ENERGY

in both films there's a strong class leveling theme - propaganda against the caste system outlawed a few years earlier? :pirates:

aan even derives bdsm sexual tension from it. definitely an EXPERIENCE however women often don't enjoy being compared to animals thx

mehboob khan's gender politics are usually thorny in a productive way (though mother india and its earlier version aurat do that woman as metaphor for the nation thing that sally hates) but ann is just...deeply strange?

have read for years about the english version ("the savage princess") and its reception in london, famous story of erol flynn trying to kiss nimmi, but i'm not sure if it still exists.

Not one that's mentioned much, but Joe Losey's Neorealist noir from this year is pretty darned good.

everyone's favorite bad romance is back in 'affair in trinidad'! i don't know who vincent sherman is but i guess i've seen several of his films. this isn't bad if you like Rita and the plot of notorious

i'm thinking of doing le plaisir and carrosse d'or rewatches back to back but that might be too much

edit: should've taken Evelyn's advice re: Bela lugosi meets a Brooklyn gorilla :P i gave it 20 mins and didn't even see bela. new respect for dean martin tho

This was interesting, neo-reo vibe without ever ceasing to be "Hollywood" (maybe by way of the Actor's Studio). Indie effort that's hugely investing in giving representation to Mex/Amer experience, so hard to fault it...

pagnol's manon des sources is quite lovely. much funnier than the remake as i remember it

it's almost 4 hrs but it flew by. i made the mistake of checking if the lead was pagnol's daughter. it wasn't

she did however grow up tending goats in camargue and inspired this film

Rory Calhoun is always hot and always memorable. One of the great actors of his generation.
