SCFZ poll: Pier Paolo Pasolini

Polling the films of director Pier Paolo Pasolini

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half of the Pasolini films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Tuesday, in seven days, whatever day that is

- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline three days, if someone requests an extension

- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: brian d

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward

if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate again

For those voting Salo #1 (two of you so far!), you enjoy it as a comedy or a serious and harrowing work? Or somewhere in between? I feel like it's supposed to be some condemnation of power structures (especially the church obviously), but I couldn't help laughing out loud (only one at the cinema doing so) when I watched it...I also have a tiiiiiny sadistic streak tho ^.^

I have only seen it once, quite a long time ago, in a tiny movie club in Beirut that was run by the Communist party. They definitely saw it as an anti-fascist, anti-structures of power (clergy/military/government) work , and that is how I experienced it back then, though my reaction might be very different now. The fascists who killed Pasolini shortly after he made Salo did not find it comical either, I guess. I read the 120 Days of Sodom a few years later, and that remains one of my favorite novels ever. The novel is harrowing but is also most definitely quite funny in its depiction of the sadistic depraved ghouls who run the show. Gotta love Sade.

i'm guessing ken russell will be completely fine, but since i can't remember his name really ever coming up on this forum, it might make sense just to confirm. so if anyone has 8+ russell films seen, please post here. i only have five.

* Pasolini's Jesus movie emphatically AVOIDS the word "Saint" in the title. The Italian is "Il vangelo secondo Matteo", not "...San Matteo". Apparently this was important to Pasolini, who was atheist and didn't believe in sainthood.

PS: Salo is in my opinion the best (and only - at least the only cinematic one I know of) depiction of how fascism evolves in the minds and bodies of (young) people. For me, the surviving (dancing) kids in the last shot have become/evolved into "perfect" fascists through the successful "training" throughout the film. They are the future of facsism, so to speak.
