1960 Poll 2.0

Post by Evelyn Library P.I. »

Choose your favourite films from 1960 (according to IMDB).

Each person can vote for up to 20 films. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number.

Twenty-film ballots can be formatted as follows:
- Five tiers of four films each, 4/4/4/4/4; scored 5-4-3-2-1 pts/film/tier
- Four tiers of five films each, 5/5/5/5; scored 4.5-3.5-2.5-1.5 pts/film/tier
- Two tiers of ten films each, 10/10; scored 4-2 pts/film/tier
- No tiers, unranked; scored 3 pts/film
- A 20-film three-tier ballot is not possible

A tiered ballot can include less than 20 films, but in that case the total number of films must still be able to be factored by the number of tiers, so:
- A five tier ballot can include only 20, 15, 10, or 5 films
- A four tier ballot can include only 20, 16, 12, 8, or 4 films
- A three tier ballot (scored 5-3-1) can include only 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, or 3 films
- A two tier ballot can include only 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, or 2 films
- Ballots that are 19, 17, 13, 11, 7 or 1 films must be no tiers

Users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible, so that others can use them for recommendations. You may revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline.

Deadline for 1960 ballots will be Monday, October 31st at around midnight EDT.

How nice, I finally have a concrete reason to watch Beyond The Time Barrier. For some reason, the only 1960s on my drive are by Roger Corman, but there's a shit-tonne of goodies available.

Starting out with these:

La Sombra Del Caudillo - Bracho
Cada Quien Su Vida - Bracho
Testament Of Orpheus - Cocteau
The Savage Innocents - Ray
1000 Eyes Of Dr Mabuse - Lang
Zazie dans Le Metro - Malle

Everything Goes Wrong - Suzuki
Eyes Without A Face - Franju
Long Night Of '43 - F Vancini
Macario - Gavaldon
The Young One - Bunuel
The Naked Island - Shindo
The Approach Of Autumn - Naruse
The Virgin Spring - Bergman

i have watched uchida's master spearman - it looks beautiful/terrible

Image

Image

historical tale of a samurai who refuses to commit seppuku as everyone expects him to hints at uchida's problems with institutions of imperial japan. it moves well and is funny with a charismatic lead performance - i think the literal title is something more like - wine, women and spear  i quite liked it. should probably check those shinodas

one movie that didn’t make my list but is very interesting is the early manmohan desai (amar akbar anthony guy) raj kapoor starrer chhalia which apart from other virtues is one of the only Indian mainstream movies to deal with the fallout of partition for decades.

Dagburn it, the copy I found of Reichhenbach's "America" movie didn't have any subtitles... so I'm going to watch The Battle Of Blood Island instead.

I watched that last night too, and it bugged the hell out of me. John Ford at peak liberalism and it's all just skin-deep no pun intended. Details on LB later today probably, I might take a little time writing about it.

frenchman found a lot of women to ogle. we were visibly more sexist then. i liked the way it was shot and the music even if i felt vaguely mocked at times

nothing was sadder than the WHITE PEOPLE'S MARDI GRAS  GOOD LORD this country would be boring w/o black culture

OK, I'll play, even though I've probably seen five movies in the last five months, what with being aargh back in aargh Umerkuh and all.

But it's one of the best years in the history of the movies.

In no order, likely final:

When a Woman Ascends the Stairs
Daughters, Wives, and a Mother
The Approach of Autumn
Innocent Sorcerers
The Bad Sleep Well
Rocco and His Brothers
L'avventura
La Dolce Vita
The Virgin Spring
Le Trou
Late Autumn
Nobody's Calling
The River Feufukei
Waves of the Danube
The Letter Never Sent
The Wedding Day (Mrinal Sen)
The Lady with the Little Dog
Resurrection (Mikhail Shveitser)
Devi
Romeo, Juliet, and Darkness
Everybody Go Home!
