Flip, how does the new remake of The Valet compare to the Francis Veber's The Valet (2006)? That is, of course, if you had seen the original.

I quite like it, so I'm also interested in the new one.

silga - i've never seen the original (i only discovered it was a remake after i watched it) so i can't say. it took me a while to warm to the one i saw, but it has an emotional centre that feels at least a bit genuine, and it's sometimes actually funny (hit and miss though) so i thought it was above average for the kind of film it is.

sagar alias jackie reloaded is what it is (an incredibly ridiculous movie from a weird time in the malayalam industry), and i'm not sure how much i could recommend thulluvadho illamai to anyone who isn't already a selvaraghavan auateurist, but otherwise it is a very good month.

i wrote about garuda gamana and vikram (which really is turning out to be the popular hit of the year so far, much moreso than rrr) elsewhere here but i was really taken by akam, which adapts a cult novel (and film) about a man, scarred in an accident, who comes to believe his beautiful new wife is a vampiric forest spirit, into a kind of modernist horror film. very striking and sad that she hasn't made another movie since.

maheshinte of course is one of the iconic movies of the "new" malayalam cinema of the last decade or so. ghost of the golden grove probably plays into a kind of cutesy pop artineess more than is healthy, but when it works it really works, great use of black and white and very inventive staging throughout.

thank you, i liked the two selvaraghavan i watched before so it might be for me.
ghost of golden grove looks the most interesting mainly cuz i know nothing about current bengali cinema, and its aesthetics seems totally different from anything i watched from india before, also excited for oram po cuz vikram vedha was one of the best films i watched recently
the top priorities tho are akam and vikram, both looks great and up to my taste

should say ghost of the golden grove uses the director of photography from all of the bengali avant garde director ashish avikunthak if that's any incentive. i think first feature he's worked on outside of avikunthak's work.

oram po is a lot of fun but it is very predicated on tamil dialogue rhythms that go over my head and some very dated seeming 2000s era editing stuff. but still it's an action romance about auto rick drivers in rival garages, so what's not to love?
