imdb lists nathan fielder's next project as a scripted comedy called the curse, which he is co-creating with benny safdie(!), and which will star fielder, safdie, and emma stone(! ! !). it's one of those 'in pre-production' things on imdb so maybe it never happens, but i'll watch if it does.

August 2021

Lazy month as I made no attempt to find and watch what I'd initially intended to due to personal life, but I'm hopeful for a more fruitful month in September.

The Savages was a great discovery. Pristine directing by Jenkins and two great performances by Hoffman and Linney. It struck a personal chord as it presented a situation that my family found ourselves in at this moment with my grandfather's situation.

Cops & Robbersons (Michael Ritchie, 1994) 2/10
Sunshine (Danny Boyle, 2007) 6/10
The Savages (Tamara Jenkins, 2007) 9/10
We Own the Night (James Gray, 2007) 8/10
The Heartbreak Kid (Peter Farrelly, Bobby Farrelly, 2007) 4/10
Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (Colin Strause, Greg Strause, 2007) 1/10
F9 (Justin Lin, 2021) 2/10
The Suicide Squad (James Gunn, 2021) 5/10
Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (Patrick Hughes, 2021) 3/10

TV:
Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey (2014) 9/10
Physical (2021) 8/10

Best: The Savages, We Own the Night
Worst: F9, AvP: Requiem

The Arrival with Sheen is bad imo. It was praised at the time for being more 'grounded' and 'realistic' than films like ID4, but any film that casts Sheen as an astrophysicist that works for SETI is not particularly concerned with being intelligent or plausible. Shoddy fillm making too. Twohy is a hack.

I thought it was a wonderful film and Twohy's direction outstanding. Sheen was also great imo, in fact I thought the whole casting was extraordinary and all actors did a commendable job (of course that's called directing, so another plus for Twohy). The effects and everything were also wonderful (on such a small budget, and so much better than all the CGI-junk that came later!). In fact I thought that Sheen's energy was riveting to watch, and he was an excellent choice for the lead - and I was sceptical before going into the film, cause I'm not a fan of Sheen, and the whole alien thing, and the film seemed like something that could be totally boring. But I gave it a shot and said to myself "if it's shitty, I'll turn it off after 15 minutes". But it was great! What a surprise! :cowboy:
Of course the story and plot and screenplay aren't believable or logical or any such thing. But the screenplay and dialogues and story for, say "King Kong" (1933) by Cooper/Schoedsack also weren't, and only someone without any knowledge of film would complain about such a trifle. This is fantasy/science-fiction, it's basically a 70s conspiracy thriller with aliens, and it's also more or less your typical "bodysnatchers" 50s/60 US/UK alien-invasion movie. There were hundreds of those made in the 1950s and 1960s. And this very late one is one of the best of those.
Of course it's not really more "grounded" or "realistic" than ID4 or other films from the period. It's totally 90s and completely over the top. But Twohy's filmmaking is more relaxed, his pacing is much much better than many other sci-fi/fantasy stuff from the time (compare this with the clumsy directing, terrible acting and horrible effects Peter Jackson would torture us with only a decade later with his Lord of the Rings movies...). This film was truly made by a total LOVER of sci-fi/fantasy movie-stuff, almost on a John Carpenter level of love and knowledge and passion. I definitely need to see more by Twohy now.

For me, something like "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" is shoddy filmmaking directed by incompetent hacks. Especially the editing is atrocious! Too bad, cause the protagonists and their story are fun.

Anvil is about the people, not the film making. I'm also a big metal fan.

Yeah, the people (and music) are wonderful! But the filmmaking (and thus the filM) are shit, imo.
I watched it at the cinema at the time of its release, and while I enjoyed the film because of story and content, I was appalled, at how bad the filmmaking was.
Anvil definitely deserved better!
And I can't rate a film based on its content, or how much I enjoy the protagonists or any such thing, but I rate it in regards to the artistry of the filmmaking.
That's me of course, and others judge films differently and get totally other stuff out of them.
