SCFZ's Favourite Directors

Post by --- »

Apparently it's been three years since we've done this, and it's pretty easy to tally, so let's go!!

RULES:
- list your favourite directors
- you can list up to 25 directors
- you can leave your list unranked, or break it into exactly five tiers
- if you leave your list unranked, you can vote for any number of directors from 1 to 25
- if you put your list in five tiers, each tier must be equal in size (in other words, your list will include either 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 directors, depending on the size of your tiers)

DEADLINE:
- at the earliest, I will tally this on January 1, 2021

I'm kinda sorry to break the streak, but it was probably inevitable on the 4th ballot.

Michelangelo Antonioni
Alfred Hitchcock
Andrei Tarkovsky
Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Marguerite Duras

Jean-Luc Godard
Ingmar Bergman
Stanley Kubrick
Werner Herzog
Lars von Trier

Carl Theodor Dreyer
Ridley Scott
Claude Chabrol
Raúl Ruiz
Peter Greenaway

Jean-Jacques Beineix
David Lynch
Jean Cocteau
Kenji Mizoguchi
Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau

Yasujiro Ozu

Alain Resnais
Charles Chaplin
Satyajit Ray

My list includes 7 living directors, and only 2 directors we haven't polled so far (Beineix and Cocteau).

I do a ranked Top 100 of my favorite filmmakers every few years (I have currently about 250 favorite filmmakers whom I love and want to see each scrap of film they ever made), so listing my Top 25 isn't that hard. :D

I have a ranked top 100 with runner ups on IMDB. I also have top 10s on Letterboxd, and everything rating 8 or higher (per year) on word. So I am well prepared for most basic scenarios.

It occurred to me that I've never seen Rohmer interviewed so I looked up this interview and unsurprisingly enough...he's just as talkative as a character in a Rohmer film.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrmFEzBKvLU

Nobody beats Kaurismäki though in being like a character from his films.
