it's funny you mention this, i thought it was https://twitter.com/gondo_mili but he is instead german? maybe yet another cedric. i'm probably one of the few who remembers thoxans at mubi as he spent 95% of his time adding to the database. when i'd think i had him pegged he'd change names and turn up somewhere else. don't think he ever let me follow him. remember like2sleep's profile page? remember when they made us stop doing thatWhat about Cedric? The Brazilian one.
History of SCFZ
Re: History of SCFZ
afaik john never popped up anywhere else. think i randomly (read: creepily) googled him one day, and he got a degree in film, and was working in the biz in some form. wish he still had some sort of online presence cuz he was an esoteric and informative voice. my mubi names (and accts) varied. can't remember them all at this point tbh. went through a phase of names based on anonymity (M. Noone, ənnōn, nowen). thought i was clever at one time or another...
blasphemy! you used to like my convos with karthik on my wall all the time cuz that dude could dialogue like a super champ. also, for a period (read: another phase cuz you go through phases when you're young), i used to use the bio(?) section of my profile to post full movies. i think you watched (or at least grabbed) ferrara's the driller killer during that time. at one point, even posted mekas' as i was moving ahead occasionally i saw brief glimpses of beauty. another iteration of my online personae was contributing to the database cuz i was/am weird, and used to really like to curate pages of films that i really love (from classics to lesser known gems to guilty pleasures), giving them well written synopses and top quality stills. in my mind, thrift store junkie and i used to battle on the database contributions thread, he'd post a bunch of additions, then i'd post a bunch of additions, and so on, and so forth... in hindsight, it's astronomical the amount of youthful energy and exuberance i wasted on shit that shoulda made me a greedy capitalist millionaire pig by now, alas ::sigh::
lolok it's just how i remember it but i may not have always connected the different personas. there were several people i could spot immediately but you were a bit clever. i expect you only followed ME to read shamus and karthik. i think at one point sally thought you were arsaib in disguise

We're all Arsaib in disguise, even you, Rischka. It's like The Three Stigmata Of Palmer Eldritch.

Aw, shucks. I'm honored. I don't even do 'Jiri stuff' that often, but I always flattered myself that Jiri-Lencho-WBA were an affinity group that formed one of the circles in the Venn diagram of overlapping aesthetic positions that made scfz so special.

omg, now i even feel guilty of my absence here. as if Saturn or Uranus would go astray from its orbit for a while. fortunately enough the solar system is complete again and the whole universe can march on towards the bright apocalyptic future!but I always flattered myself that Jiri-Lencho-WBA were an affinity group that formed one of the circles in the Venn diagram of overlapping aesthetic positions
btw. i remember from Mubi also one noteworthy character who if followed you back, has put under his wisest of the wise assessment your profile and then provided somewhat paternalistic advice how to bring your cinephilia to perfection. thus to follow the guy was something like going to a psychiatrist (cinephilia disorder specialist). i remember (upon he followed me back) i was told i should watch more mainstream cinema to become a better cinephile (i guess, i was even "medicated" few crap Hollywood titles to watch urgently). however, i can't recall his Mubi nick. i feel now a bit like Herr R. in the record store trying to describe the tune he wants to buy, but maybe someone will recall the Mubian I mean and will remember his nick and some more trivia. he was quite popular at the dusk of Mubi.
Haha, never saw it like that, but I'm honored to be put with two such fascinating cinephiles into a triumvirate.Lencho of the Apes wrote: ↑Fri Sep 11, 2020 1:59 amAw, shucks. I'm honored. Can't help with that strange guy (it seems like I never followed him and/or just got advise like this on a regular basis and forgot it ), but it sounds really funny! "perfecting your cinephile crendentials"

Just now reading this conversation.
Curious if anyone remembers a Dimitris something. I remember him as being particularly, uh... aggressive. Maybe got banned? Maybe disappeared of his own volition? Maybe he was also just arsaib?

Yes no one forgets dim he was banned from icm also
Yes -- Dimitris was finally banned from Mubi, after being allowed to spew his hateful venom against anyone and everyone for much longer than was really defensible by mubi admins. A really foul person.
These matters are best disposed of from a great height. Over water.
AKA Arthur? The virulent Corbyn supporter guy? Or is that a different D word name... huh.
damian -- he gave it a decent try but he'll never be legendary like dim
funny he was always saying american gov't was fascist....wonder if he's still saying that

ohhhhh yeah, i got confused. mustn't forget damian! ready to (say that he is ready to) kill the capitalists for the righteous cause
Damian... was kinda like that one from the movie...
I liked his "american government is fascist" stance, but other than that...

I miss the chaos of Mubi, in addition to the fact that the users I tended to converse with the most (e.g Peabody, Parks, Ari, Jack/John L, Jazz, Spence etc) did not migrate here, generally speaking. I also used to butt heads repeatedly with many users like Fal, but good discussions often resulted from it. Overall I'd say I was more 'combative' in the Mubi days---it was a far more competitive environment than here--and there were a few times where some users tried to have me banned or muzzled. It never worked. I don't recall even receiving a warning.
Mubi also had more left wingers than here and insufferable 'SJW' types.
I met Ari in real life twice during the summer of 2015/16 when he was temporarily living in Australia. We got along well. I also met another user a few times that used to get into all sorts of fights with people on there. His name escapes me, but he was a militant vegan from Melbourne who had little interest in contemporary films. I didn't actually plan to meet him, we just bumped into each other.

i'll say this, mubi was a good training ground for learning which people you never ever wanted to engage with and would usually automatically not a read a word from. lessons i abide by even now

I mean no offense to you, Joks, but the "SJW" is grade-A Twitter-reality bullshit that seems to have been created by whoever the "anti-SJWs" are to complain about people who point out (on Twitter) things that are bad. Its self-righteous complaining about a group that they're accusing of complaining.Joks Trois wrote: ↑Thu Sep 17, 2020 3:33 pm Mubi also had more left wingers than here and insufferable 'SJW' types.
I know a bunch of people here are on and use Twitter. This is the type of shit that made me flee from it years ago.
But, yeah. As a group we seem to have learned to avoid the political fights that get people mad.
only because we deleted the politics thread. it was a good decision
thinking about jazz and how he started so many topics i thought he ran the forum. lived in hawaii and seemingly almost never left the house

Firstly, I guess you didn't notice that I used quotes above? Secondly, there is a big difference between people who point out 'injustices', whether real or perceived, and those who use any excuse to point out problems for various egotistical reasons, to hide their own shortcomings or simply because they aren't intelligent enough to have a more complex understanding of the world. To me those kind of people most definitely deserve that label, and that is who it was primarily created for. The fact that it's used as a 'catch all' term by some conservatives and right wingers to stifle any debate or conversation about 'social justice' is not a concern to me. It was simply inevitable given that they are less concerned with those questions overall.john ryan wrote: ↑Thu Sep 17, 2020 9:05 pmI mean no offense to you, Joks, but the "SJW" is grade-A Twitter-reality bullshit that seems to have been created by whoever the "anti-SJWs" are to complain about people who point out (on Twitter) things that are bad. I'm also glad that we don't argue much about politics on here too. It's a huge relief.

Dimitris and Fal were 'SJW's', or at least displayed strong tendencies, although Fal was clearly more intelligent than the average person I would normally assign that label to. Did Fal change his name a few times? I could be confusing him with somebody else.
We didn't get along too well back in the old Mubi days, but I never thought you were a troll He thought Jerry was a troll? I always thought he was just a grump.
Jazzalowbrow lol
I ADORED The Auteurs forum! I discovered it very late, unfortunately, only a year, or maybe two, before it became Mubi. I wish I'd made copies of many posts there and saved them in word documents. There were so many astute and knowledgeable film buffs contributing there, great insights and arguments about film styles, techniques, etc., discussions about when these things first appeared, how they evolved and were adapted later, and who the best practitioners of various filmcraft were, all that writing is now lost! Such a shame!
One of my first posts there was to contradict - and rather rudely, too! - a regular with the nick "Ruby Stevens" (aka rischka). I came across as a complete and utter a-hole and I was mortified, because Ruby Stevens was one of the nicest participants there.
