SCFZ poll: Robert Aldrich
SCFZ poll: Robert Aldrich
Polling the films of director Robert Aldrich
The rules:
- your list can include no more than half of the Aldrich films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.
- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.
- deadline for ballots: next Friday, in seven days, whatever day that is
- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline three days, if someone requests an extension
- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: greg x, rischka, dt, silga, kanafani, brian d, greennui, ofrene, mesnalty, john ryan
umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/
one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward
if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate again

My ballot would only make things more canonical, so I'll pass on this one. I love both KMD and WEHTBJ, but they don't need my help.
The opposite of 'reify' is... ?
Thanks, Flip. I choose Clarence Brown. If he has already been surveyed, I'll choose Victor Fleming.

we haven't polled clarence brown (or victor fleming) yet - and while i imagine most people will have seen a few of their films, i wonder if enough will have seen 8+ to make for a poll. i've not seen more than three by either - anyone who has seen 8+ films by brown or fleming, please post here!
we'd need one more with 10+ if it's the case that roscoe has seen 10, that would be good to confirm though
I've seen 20 Browns, so Clarence works. Some of them are quite good too, others though, not so much. He seemed to get stuck making family films for a while, they're not bad for his contribution by any means, but not what I'd be looking for. And for future reference, enough Flemings too, even if you want to discount those famous ones he only directed part of.

ok, if roscoe has seen 10+ clarence brown films, then that will be our poll - if not, we'll still need some more input
Yup, seen more than ten of Clarence Brown's films. Brown might be one of those directors you don't realize you've seen so many of their films until you check out a filmography and go oh yeah, that guy....

To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence.

Aw, dang. Kiss Me Deadly is a heck of a film, but I was hoping for a late push from Emperor of the North to take the A-No.1 spot.
