SCFZ poll: Peter Hutton

Post by flip »

Polling the films of director Peter Hutton

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half of the Hutton films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Friday, in seven days, whatever day that is

- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline up to three days, if someone requests an extension

- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: umbugbene, greennui

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward

if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate again

because of the annual top 100 poll, i think i'll be putting the director polls temporarily on hold, so this one will probably stay open more than a week... just as a reminder to myself, i need to tally:

fred zinnemann
max linder (done)
henri-georges clouzot
peter hutton
noah baumbach

and whoever posts the first ballot, feel free to nominate our next director! (except umbugbene or me or greennui)

Seen 2. Didn't care for Boston Fire, but Three Landscapes was breathtaking.

1. Three Landscapes (2013)

Will think on nomination options....

Would love to see if George Sherman would work (seen 8). If not, then Ray Enright (seen 12). And if not, then Robert W. Paul (seen 20). If none will work, I'll pass.

we have time to find a next director, i won't be starting the next poll right away - i've seen 3 by sherman, 1 by paul, and 0 by enright, but if i can find the paul films, it looks like i could watch a lot of them, so i might try to do that in the next few days

i also never knew if vincent sherman and george sherman were related, i assumed they probably were since sherman isn't so common a last name, but i gather they're not (since vincent sherman was a stage name). anyway, seen five by vincent if he ever gets nominated.

interesting, so if we get one more person with about 7+ of sherman or paul seen, then we can go with that director!

Thanks Greennui for the video links. I've seen 8 now. I'm not the biggest fan of non-narrative cinema, but I liked these best:

1. At Sea
2. New York Portrait, Chapter II
3. Three Landscapes
4. Time and Tide

Did anyone ever tell Mr. Hutton that the title of Skagafjördur is misspelled? The 'd' should be an eth ('ð').
