In these our screwy times, when folk speak in awed, hushed tones of the Mexican beer that's going to kill us all and act like Jack Nicholson in As Good As It Gets, it should perhaps come as no surprise to me that my flight has been moved up two bleedin' weeks. Good thing my landlady doesn't have a new tenant desperate to move in... Sigh. So, okay, whatever, I guess I can do a fitty. Suddenly I have a lot of free time. May even watch an '80 or two, too. Sigh.flip wrote: ↑Tue Jul 14, 2020 1:15 pm have a great trip karl, and good to see you again! and if you have a top 50 film list lying around, i'd love to count it as part of our annual scfz top 100 films poll: https://scfzforum.org/phpBB3/viewtopic. ... 2&start=30
hope you'll be back someday, i've discovered a lot of great films from your lists.

Well it has already killed two otherwise fit & healthy people that I know & I don't want any more to die so perhaps some people need to be a bit more awed.
Sorry your flight was delayed, but glad you're still around!

My apologies for being flippant then, and sorry to hear you know people who've died of it - but you're the first, and I only know you electronically. I'll refrain from using the 1980 thread to air any more of my thoughts on this subject, which I'm sure we could argue about all day.

no worries karl, and please don't refrain from anything, it's interesting to know what everyone else is thinking. and glad it hasn't touched you & yours. ♥

Wait, zero votes for Le Voyage en Douce? One of the sweetest road movies ever? Shame, a real shame.
I'll vote for others that received way too little love. Won't bother with the rest.

u got that right. this film is visually stunning and i'm not sure how much of the color shifting is due to the vhs rip
poetry can't be fully appreciated in translation but it's a fascinating piece, i didn't always know which characters were real and which were 'characters'
added some eng subs in watchlist thread fwiw

No, wait. There's nothing wrong with the file, I was just discombobbed because I didn't get the pop-up box. It downloaded automatically to my drive and I ended up with six copies of it. I have to figure out what's up with the part one/part two thing, but everything else is fine.Sorry for the fall salaam.

Hubba-hubba!
But...judging from what people have written on LB... I'm the only person that thought it was funny?
Easy 3.9 stars, and that punchline almost pushed it to 4.
Interesting sidebar: The soundtrack is credited to Don Christensen, Julia Heyward and Joel Harris -- Heyward's a gallery artist who mostly doesn't record, but has done work with Laurie Anderson, and Don Christenson and "Jody" Harris (if it's the same person) were in avant-punk band The Contortions.

Thomson's full of shit, there's nothing "realist" about a movie designed to look like sepia-tone that's built around a character whose wavering sanity leads him into poetic, irrational monologues that express his concerns through a glass very darkly.
Now I'll watch the last 4 episodes consciously wondering when the shoe is going to fall. I might have preferred not to have read that summary of the narrative.

cognitive dissonance is a joy to behold, ain't it? the character study comments are, um, generous...? it's really more a darkly comic submersion. in that way, it's the yin to lustig's maniac's yang. also, feels like the missing link between bob clark's black christmas and a christmas story
sidenote: watched alibaba aur 40 chor (listed as '79 on boxd, but '80 on imdb), clan of the white lotus, and the last metro. a couple should make my final list. i'll let y'all guess which one might not. hoping to add a few more before poll's end. yay gluttonous media intake veiled under the guise of productivity!
Tired: Berlin Alexanderplatz
Wired: Eight Hours Don't Make a Day
I've watched a few films for the poll so far but C’est la vie is the only one that's under consideration for joining final the list.

Germany, Pale Mother by Helma Sanders-Brahms has gotten zero attention, and that ain't right.

favorite discovery of 1980 thus far is The Last Witness. big long but steady procedure with huge weight of historical tragedy.. definitely one of the best south korean movie ever made

Well, I watched one '80 movie this month, but it was eleven hours, so I'll call that a fine showing.
1. Hollywood (Kevin Brownlow & David Gill)
Bat Without Wings (Chor Yuen)
Narrows Inlet (David Rimmer)
