SCFZ poll: Jia Zhangke
SCFZ poll: Jia Zhangke
Polling the films of director Jia Zhangke
The rules:
- your list can include no more than half of the Zhangke films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.
- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.
- deadline for ballots: next Friday, in seven days, whatever day that is
- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline up to three days, if someone requests an extension
- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: wba, greg x, ofrene, greennui, evelyn, bure, mesnalty, umbugbene, roscoe, st gloede, brian d, kanafani, silga, oscarwerner, dt., nrh, arkheia, grabmymask, thoxans, john ryan, liquidnature, caracortada, rischka, zulawski, twodeadmagpies, augusto
umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/
one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward
if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate again

For now, my vote would be the same as Flip’s (sorry, Crypt’s ) , but I’ll try to watch at least one more from Jia as I like all the three films I saw too much and I need to be able to vote for more. Great director!

Thanks! Can we do Emilio Fernández?crypt trotsky wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2019 3:45 am jww - you can pick the director we poll next if you want to!
we can if he has enough views! i suspect he will based on conversations we've had on this forum in the past, but i think we should check - if four people have seen 8+, or three people have seen 10+, emilio fernandez will be our next poll -- if anyone has seen 8+ fernandez films, please post here!
i got 7 but i could watch another one
Sounds good. Let me know, otherwise I can pick another director. I've certainly seen 8+crypt trotsky wrote: ↑Sun Oct 13, 2019 4:28 am we can if he has enough views! i suspect he will based on conversations we've had on this forum in the past, but i think we should check - if four people have seen 8+, or three people have seen 10+, emilio fernandez will be our next poll -- if anyone has seen 8+ fernandez films, please post here!
i went to see still life with my dad in one of the uk's oldest surviving cinemas (1912, clevedon). he thought it was preposterous. but he didn't fall asleep, which is frankly astonishing, so good on him.

i've got lots of emilio fernández. lencho does too, but i don't think he usually votes in these. maybe someone could convince him.

Pickpocket and Still Life were really good, but fell short of great, his debut was disappointing but forgivable. I know I need to watch The World and Unknown Pleasures. Also excited for 24 City and Ash is the Purest White.

ok, i think with jww, lencho and brian, we have the views for an emilio fernandez poll, which is great because mexican cinema has been really underrepresented in our polls so far. i'll start that poll on tuesday.

i'm happy to extend poll deadlines if people are planning to watch stuff - there's no rush with any of these things
