SCFZ poll: Olivier Assayas

Post by flip »

Polling the films of director Olivier Assayas

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half of the Assayas films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Tuesday, in seven days, whatever day that is

- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline three days, if someone requests an extension

- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: greg x, rischka, dt

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward

if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate for a fourth time

Love the guy. There's always something that feels so fresh about his filmmaking.

Seen 5.

Summer Hours
Carlos

Summer Hours is for me one of the most beautiful ruminations on the passing of one generation and its replacement by newer ones, and ultimately the meaninglessness of personal attachments to objects, because those meanings are as ephemeral as our lives.

It's a wonderful film. The mother's secrets, including a love-affair, are gradually revealed through objects in her house (paintings and other valuable objets d'art) as her children divide these treasures and decide how best to allocate the proceeds.

The grandaughter's party of teenagers at the end - dancing, drunken friends giggling and gossiping in her late grandmother's garden - pronounces "grandmother might as well have never existed".

This and Carlos are the only Assayas films I can say I've truly enjoyed so far - but man, how I loved Summer Hours.

not really a fan. There's always something that feels so derivative and tired about his films.

01. Winter's Child (1989)
02. Personal Shopper (2016)
03. Late August, Early September (1998)

Assayas seen: 6
To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence.

SUMMER HOURS

Was bored senseless by CLOUDS. Have to get to CARLOS one of these days.
These matters are best disposed of from a great height. Over water.

up at letterboxd, i didn't add oscar's votes to the tally, but they didn't affect the rankings at all anyway:

missed this one but for the record i've seen 7 and my votes would have gone to only personal shopper / carlos. don't care strongly enough about him anyway. this is a good ranking but curious about what people see in sils maria above personal shopper. rip.
