Re: top 100 poll - SCFZ fifth annual

So for this year I wanted to do something a little different. Whenever I’ve made 'top film' lists in the past, I’ve always been partially dissatisfied because my lists ends up being filled with films I haven’t seen in years and sometimes don’t remember as clearly as I’d like to remember them. For th...

Watched Running Scared (1986) tonight. Crystal and Hines enliven the buddy cop routine with a fair amount of good chemistry and humor. Hyams has fun with a couple big set pieces (a lengthy car chase through Chicago’s airport, streets, and subways ends racing down the L while dodging oncoming trains)...

What's everyone's desert island spices? Salt, pepper, cumin, cayenne, oregano, paprika, curry powder, and chili powder. Garlic, onion, and ginger are essential too although I try to get those fresh when possible. Sometimes I'll also use stuff like triguisar, pimentón, and tajín for certain South Am...

Il Cinema Ritrovato 2019

Don't think I'll be able to go this year but I wanted to make a post about Il Cinema Ritrovato. For anyone who doesn't know about it, it's a one-of-a-kind week-long film festival at the end of June in Bologna, Italy that's dedicated exclusively to archival restorations screened on film. The program ...

In anticipation of watching Points and Lines for the 1958 poll, I wanted to check out another Tsuneo Kobayashi film to get a frame of reference for his work. I watched one of his films from the previous year, The Deep Blue Sea (1957), a very good film that shifts between melodrama, musical, and crim...

Speaking of queer resonance, as far as I can see no one has thus far mentioned my sure-to-be #1 of 1958: Bell, Book, and Candle , a kind of rom-com Vertigo that pairs Novak-Stewart and is worth seeing if for no other reason that its status as an accidentally-in-dialogue-with companion to the Hitch ...
