This one's tough, and I do feel bad that the Tsui Hark has gotten so few votes so far, but I still gotta go with xWheels. His Motorbike, Her Island is recognizably Obayashi, just bursting with creative energy, but compared to a lot of his films (even Bound for the Fields from the same year) it's lig...

If I recall right, there's a character in Ferdydurke who translates a poem but the translation basically just consists of the word "calves" repeated a bunch of times.

Since I've been sick and haven't felt like doing anything but watching films, I've started Kevin Jerome Everson's Park Lanes , which is streaming on the Criterion Channel. It's an 8-hour document of work in an American factory, more aesthetically varied than a strictly structuralist exercise a la Be...

As for Créatures , you and I seem to be in the minority that actually likes the film. Varda herself was disappointed with it, though I don't know why. Maybe she was overcome by the negative reaction to such a quirky and surreal movie. I think it makes sense if you view it as a study in the ways peo...

Touch matchup but I'm going with xEat - August in the Water probably has more depth to it but I connected more with the unassumingly lovely Kamome Diner.

Yokohama BJ Blues was lovely, a very strange and atmospheric experience that will definitely linger with me. Much of the plot eluded me, but there were many striking moments (the joyful montage with Akira in the middle, the unsuccessful sex scene where the screen is intermittently filled with the b...

I liked 'em both, but Distance is my kind of Kore-eda. I love the early stuff like After Life where he really swings for the fences thematically way more than the more recent family dramas.

Excellent matchup for me. I quite like Fedorchenko's ethnographic eye, and while Silent Souls isn't as intriguingly mysterious as Celestial Wives of the Meadow Mari , I still enjoyed it a lot. But Earth Light was a true revelation. The editing style, the colors, the natural beauty... it all blew me ...

I would happily watch a few more Dulac shorts too, though I see that her 5-hour film Gossette is now available online (maybe for the first time, judging from the number of Letterboxd logs it has), so if we do have to wait a while to poll her, perhaps some of us will have watched that one by then.

Genre intro - (Quasi-)docs about capital

The name is pretty self-explanatory, really. Capital is obviously a multi-tentacled phenomenon that can be approached from many different angles, so I promise that not all of my picks will simply be communist agitprop (but at least one of them will be). My first pick, Jem Cohen's Chain , is a good d...

I love outsider art so I was very glad to learn about Rizzoli, but from a cinematic point of view, Yield to Total Elation doesn't have much to recommend it. I quite liked If I Were for Real , on the other hand. It's a weird mix of comedy and tragedy and critique of Chinese party politics, and though...
