I like post-Gerwig baumbach more than the OG-baumbauch. I also have a personal annoyance at him naming his first child Rohmer. But I’ve quite enjoyed several of his films nonetheless.

Half of which I love, the other half I find on a spectrum from middling to awful... but everything he's done is quite interesting at very least.
1. The Long Goodbye
2. Gosford Park
3. 3 Women
4. The Player

I've only seen two. As a 12 year old I was weirdly obsessed with both Running Scared (my first ever DVD) and The Musketeer The Musketeer, upon re-evaluation by someone who isn't 12 years old is an absolute garbage film, that manages to get garbage performances from every single actor (especially Jus...

I tried to watch Gertrud for this... but the new Criterion Channel has some sort of DRM bug that won't allow you to play any films if you have a linux based machine. I hope to get it sorted before the poll ends though.

Seen 7 Kubrick
1. Eyes Wide Shut
2. Clockwork Orange
3. Dr. Strangelove
I guess I prefer Kubrick the Comedian. I have a strong sense that I would like Barry Lyndon. If I get a chance to check it out before this ends, I'll update as necessary.

I gotta watch some of these films you're all posting stills from (Especially the Maupassant adaptation). '58 is a light year for me. But a few indisputable masterpieces... So currently my list would be: Mon Oncle Touch of Evil The Magician Vertigo Elevator to the Gallows I've seen A Night to Remembe...

Not really a Barry Gifford story, but I once read "Wild At Heart" on a plane when flying to Costa Rica, with the film poster as the cover. Coincidentally Laura Dern was on my plane, while we were all waiting in line to go through immigration I smirked and pointed at the cover of the book. ...

Yeah, the weird robotic sense in the narration caused me to pause a couple times and wonder whether or not it was a dub. I'll check out the German one, because I felt like I couldn't follow the narration due to its bizarre rhythm

Ah...
I'm not a big fan of ratings... but I love these. I feel like I've seen a lot of Keaton, and still end up pretty middling in terms of logged films.
I'll probably go temporarily rate Ackerman/Varda for the sake of the next one. Just to try something different.

I just saw her last month at the Berlinale, where she premiered her last film. She seemed slow and stiff, but otherwise really lively. I'm so sad to hear this, I really hoped she'd pull a Manoel de Olvieria on us and direct into her 100s.

Re: 21st Century v 20th Century Films
Of course one can cherry-pick films and filmmakers from the 21st century, and thus get the impression that all is well, and there are many great filmmakers shooting many great films in our time (which is true). But this is just the shiny tip of a rotting iceberg, or better speaking: the iceberg has...

One of my favorite quotes is this bit of dialogue from The Crying of Lot 49 : You know what a miracle is. Not what Bakunin said. But another world's intrusion into this one. Most of the time we coexist peacefully, but when we do touch there's cataclysm. Like the church we hate, anarchists also belie...

Seen 10. He's the (literal) best. I have regular fantasies about re-watching his films and discovering new ones we didn't know existed yet.

2. Last Year at Marienbad

The last 3D film I saw was The Creature from the Black Lagoon on VHS when I was 10 or 11 years old. I rented it from the video store, however they didn't give me glasses and I had to make my own out of red and blue candy wrappers. They didn't work super well, and diminished the rest of the experienc...

Finishing out my week at the Berlinale. Yesterday I saw the Andre Techine L'Adieu A la Nuit . My first time at the Berlinale and it's the type of film festival where there is so much utter garbage, that a middling film that is genuinely self assured feels like a breath of fresh air. So things like t...

I had an aversion to Rohmer's historical films, a bit out of fear that they'd lose some of their magic by losing the contemporary Paris locales. But last night I gave The Marquise of O a shot, and was scared at first to see my worst fears confirmed in the stagey gun fights and depictions of honorabl...
