Re: DtC voting and watching

Oh, thanks a lot for the support! It got similar results from last year in the end, so it seems positive and negative votes were evened out. I may try it again next year.

Re: DtC voting and watching

you've done way better than me The ones that got in from my noms were safer I think, and also more widely watched so I had a better idea of their chances. One of them ( Marona ) was featured in one of the film festivals of the forum. Anyway, I'd like to check your noms, sadly I couldn't before the ...

Re: DtC voting and watching

Pêcheur d'Islande didn't make it. one of the best films i've seen last year. i forget there are so many silent haters at ICM It seems it just wasn't seen enough, with 8 votes the trends could go anywhere. A lot of my nominations didn't have a substantial amount of viewers either (including one (1, ...

Watched two early Sirks, both from 1935, when he was still called Hans Detlef Sierck: April, April! and Das madchen vom moorhof . I liked them both a similar amount, but I was surprised at how different in tone and direction they were. April, April! is basically a fast-paced comedy about societal as...

Oh yeah, and apparently his whole political career is a divine mission God passed to him through his dead dog.

Makes one think how screwed up and intense was the political disaffection in Argentina to elect this media clown. Hoping this isn't as much of a disaster as it's aimed to be.

Re: What I Watched This Month......

This was a messy month, not so much for the amount but the irregular pace, but could fit some great stuff in: Wara wara (José María Velasco Maidana, 1930) - 7/10 Les gaz mortels (Abel Gance, 1916) - 7/10 Nyonin aishû (Mikio Naruse, 1937) - 8/10 Resurrectio (Alessandro Blasetti, 1931) - 9/10 Marijka ...

Re: Last Watched

Finally a classic I've postponed for very long... Kurosawa's Ikiru . Liked it a lot, particularly everything surrounding and about Takashi Shimura's performance. Such a grey and belittled man trying to find his worth, he is so convincing that his character ends up even a bit exasperating and I feel...

Re: Last Watched

Watched four since my random venture into Hungarian silent zone. Simone, le voyage du siècle which I watched with parents and aunt and was... serviceable, just a very by-the-numbers biopic of a quite interesting figure in European politics from the last Century. I think it's a fine crowdpleaser all ...

Been a very long while since I posted here. I want to fix that, this is always a fun thread to read. So let's break the ice with Az Obsitos (Béla Balogh, 1917), which is... really something. First off, no subs and Hungarian intertitles, so I had to make some guerrilla filmwatching (¿?) with Google t...

Oh yeah, Attila! A surprisingly solid source of empathy. I also empathized with Brunhilde for a while, but like the rest, she fully veered toward the asshole side in the end of her arc. This is quite the cautionary tale against all forms of revenge. They are all fascinating characters in their ways ...

Lang's Die Nibelungen, both films. What a beautiful dyptic, it's a fascinating visual piece as well as an epic scale ride. But I swear, the dragon is the only character out there that didn't deserve to die in the end. Siegfried is a jerk.

Re: Best films seen in 2020 regardless of year

A lot of long postponed titles in a year I've picked up significantly from the previous four. Also Annecy. And a few late 2019 hype. And anime movies. And the animated DC-verse. And a bunch of random stuff as usual. 10/10s The phantom carriage (Victor Sjöström, 1921) The fall of the house of Usher (...

Griffith's The birth of a nation so I could finally remove it from my watchlist, but now it's forever tainting my watched list. What a dilemma. Seriously, this was vile. Mine is from the ending credis of Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight, a semi-forgotten gem of 00s TV anime. The character featured is called Mika. I'm going with the 2016-2020 period: 2016 Louise en hiver / Louise by the shore (Jean-François Laguionie) - 8/10 Moana (A bunch of Disney guys) - 8/10 Alice through the looking glass (James Bobin) - 5/10 2017 Last and first men (Jóhann Jóhannsson) - 8/10 Free! Re: What I Watched This Month......

Weird month with random bursts and a nearly two-week period not watching anything, but I'm more or less satisfied. Some interesting animation at the beginning and some silent essentials in the end: 1. Totsuzen! Neko no kuni banipal pitt / Catnapped! The movie (1995) - 8/10 2. Coonskin (1975) - 7/10 ...

Seen 187, highest unseen is Forrest Gump. Not going to break the consensus on this list, it's pretty bad. Its huge recency bias makes it look flashy and inconsistent and the few classics that are represented seem like token choices at this point. It's a weird list when the current flavor of the mont...

Re: How Did You All Get Into Film?

Not a very cool story I guess. I started getting into film relatively late, when I was like 18-19, and the main reason was simply curiosity. I've been in forums for a long while -mostly related to The Simpsons at that point in my life- and film-related threads always piqued my interest. I had some l...
