SCFZ poll: Jacques Demy

Post by flip »

Polling the films of director Jacques Demy

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half of the Demy films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Tuesday, in seven days, whatever day that is

- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline three days, if someone requests an extension

- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: brian d, greennui, ofrene, kanafani, bure

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward

if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate again

I've only seen 5. I really like what I've seen, but I have an innate aversion to musicals that's probably kept me away from more of his stuff.

LOLA
UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG

I like the two above as much as I dislike the others that I was able to force myself to endure.

only seen one, which was great.
To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence.

Think we have enough for an Imamura poll? If not then I'll be sorely disappointed and have to suggest a Ron Howard poll as penance for the site.

the results are in... with not one but two issues, so we'll need a couple of runoff votes. details in next post.

results

2. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) -- 20 pts
3. Model Shop (1969) -- 15 pts
4. Lola (1961) -- 12 pts
5. A Room in Town (1982) -- 9 pts
6. Donkey Skin (1970) -- 8 pts
7. Bay of Angels (1963) -- 7 pts
8. The Pied Piper (1972) -- 3 pts
9. Lady Oscar (1979) -- 1 pt

edit: we got a new ballot that broke the 1st place tie, so this runoff vote will probably be unnecessary, though we might as well still have it just in case another ballot reintroduces a tie for #1

first issue - we again have a tie for 1st. so we need a tiebreaking vote. i was able to infer seven votes (either because both films were ranked in a ballot above, or because one was, and i can tell from letterboxd the voter has seen the other) :

umbrellas: bure, oscarwerner, john ryan, caracortada
rochefort: greg x, mayaderenfan, umbugbene

if your name does not appear above, and you have seen both films, the umbrellas of cherbourg and the young girls of rochefort, please cast a vote below for the film you think deserves the #1 spot in our poll. tiebreaker: fewest letterboxd views.

second issue: we didn't reach a top ten. so if you've seen any demy films that didn't make the top nine above, and that you think are good enough to deserve the #10 slot, please vote for one film below (regardless of how many demy films you've seen in total). tiebreaker: fewest letterboxd views

and if someone wanted to vote in this poll, but hasn't yet, i'll accept brand new ballots as well, and if any of those new ballots resolve either of the two issues above, then that will supersede the results of the runoff vote(s). all voting will close in 48 hours, so thursday midday edt.

nice to see you evelyn! and thanks for breaking the tie - i'll still accept brand new ballots up until midday thursday, but unless those ballots re-create a 1st place tie, young girls of rochefort will be our winner.
