Doubling the Canon 2022 Update - Nominations

Post by Angel »

Welcome to our annual update. Image

What is this?
Begun in 2007, Doubling the Canon is a yearly project which aims to expand the Film Canon as crafted by the They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? website.

Who can participate?
Anyone can join. Filmmakers, FIPRESCI members or Sight & Sound voters were among our jurors in the past, they are welcome as well.
Requirement for newbies: Please note that you will be requested to identify yourself, just to make sure that the poll is answered (only once) by cinephiles of good will.

Where?
In this thread.
In the ICMForum: https://forum.icmforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=5829
Via e-mail: doublingthecanon@hotmail.com

What is new in this update?
Any film that is newly admitted to the Doubled Canon must be subjected to a revote after 5 years so we're going to revote the 2017 entries.

2021 update:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=681
https://forum.icmforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=5347

Phase I: Nominations for titles not on either TSPDT lists (2000 Greatest Films + 21st Century top 1000) or the Doubling list.
Deadline: March 30.
Each participant can nominate a maximum of 12 films. Shorts, TV-movies, and TV mini-series are eligible. Every nominated movie goes onto the roster as a nominee. Films released in 2021-22 aren't allowed this year for our exercise.
Along with a list of the titles, please include the corresponding list of bare IMDb urls for the same films.
Please, don't edit your post! To change your ballot or add new titles you have to write a new reply.

Phase II: Ratings.
You're invited to rate the films you have seen (whether you have participated in the phase I or not). The nominees with the highest ratings make it into our list.

Thank you in advance for joining us in this game.

P.S.: If you know anyone adventurous enough (on or off the forum) that you think would also enjoy participating, feel free to invite them as well.

I'm struggling to cull down my list from 14 to 12, might just wait a while and hope someone else ends up picking some of them!

aw i genuinely can't come up with nominations, and if you're not on kg, it's so difficult to watch other people's and vote on them (and besides those other people seem to like very very very different movies to me)...

is there even a canon anymore to double? that would require a community first...

i appear to be moving through a dark cinephile phase, sorry

Call for ratings: Final phase of the DtC 2022 update!

[ironic mode]Thank you very much for your participation in the first phase[/ironic mode]. In this second and final phase we invite all doublers (whether you nominated films in the first phase or not) to rate the nominated films. Thank you once again for your enthusiastic response.

Phase II: Ratings.
You're invited to rate the films you have seen (whether you have participated in the phase I or not). The nominees with the highest ratings make it into our list.
You can cast your votes anytime between now and Wednesday, April 27. Only 'write-in' updates will be accepted after the deadline.
Please, sign your ballot. Example: This is Angel Glez.

Rating system: 0-6 (3.75 was the cutoff last year)

Procedure 1: Just download the ballot (if you prefer I can send you the file) and email it back to me (doublingthecanon@hotmail.com)
DDL: https://we.tl/t-hp0h8L02jj
Procedure 2: Online (PM me for details)

https://www.imdb.com/list/ls538186228/
https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/doub ... ngel+glez/

Don't remove anything, don't reorder. Untouched ballot with ratings, please.

After submitting your ballot, post a reply here to make sure I received the file. You can also add comments or statistics if you wish.

Early ballots would be appreciated. Then, if you watch new films or forgot to rate some, send me a 'write-in' ballot.

Hallo all nominators *rolls eyes at ironic angel*

If you want me to vote on your noms please let me know if available to watch somewhere & will make an effort to watch if not seen already*

*although you probably don't want my rating if your nominated films are: musicals, violent, rapey, or the central protag is a child or mentally disabled, because I will hate it.

so i've spent the last three hours going through this list, i get worse stats every year - spiralling ever further out of the cinephile community - and i've seen only 272

on the other hand i've 129 in my watchlist, so can probably get to some of them...BUT BUT BUT there's some i can't find and....

THERE IS A FILM ABOUT ROBERT WALSER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

angel, who nominated that film? - 1978, dir: HHK Schoenherr - and are they likely to be the kind of person who can supply it with subtitles? argh.

that's gonna be my new pierre zucca's roberte i reckon, that i hanker after forever.

also wanna see:
los jueves, milagro - luis garcía berlanga
marš, marš! tra-ta-ta! - raimondas vabalas

can anyone find those with subtitles?

had a few of his other noms lined up, in fact was just about to watch récréations right now anyway...

ICMForum's doublers are way more organized: They run a challenge to watch/discuss/recommend/promote and share nominated films.

Robert Walser was nominated by our pal jdidaco. It's available here https://medienarchiv.zhdk.ch/people/771 ... 6f2a807b24 but I do not know if subtitles are needed.

not sure if there's any point in running a challenge here, there's only about 5 of us that watch any films/comment....

@Roger: where did you get subs for the following?

Deti Pamira / The Children of Pamir (1963, Vladimir Motyl)
Marš, marš, tra-ta-ta / March, march! Tra-ta-ta! (1964, Raimondas Vabalas)
Puteshestviye v aprel / Travel in April (1964, Vadim Derbenyov)
Romeo, moy sosed / Romeo, My Neighbour (1964, Shamil Makhmudbekov)
Yerankyuni / Triangle (1967, Henrik Malyan)

Roger habitually proposes some titles unavailable online. 'Zhila-byla devochka' got subbed and was a success a couple of years ago, but others like 'Osenniye svadby' remain unsubbed.

Hi Karl (sorry, quote doesn't work).

Yes, Angel is right in what he says. I wouldn't be too hopeful of subs showing up online for these. From what I recall, the auto-translated subs on YT are acceptable for the Motyl and the Derbenyov.

that's a whole lot of intriguing, roger. so clearly you nominate untainted by even the faintest strategy, since no one else is likely to vote for them (apart from put them on their watchlist, which i've done). are you multi-language fluent? or i guess, since a lot of your noms are soviet, then maybe they're all dubbed in russian and you speak that....

Hi sally.

I have tended to nominate films I have discovered over the preceding 12 months - new faves, if you will. I don't speak Russian, unfortunately. Just English and French, middling Irish, and a bit of German. I rely on the auto-translated subs, and read synopses on the Russian websites (KinoTeatr, Kinobox, etc.) to understand and appreciate the plot and direction the film takes.

I just like to highlight films I have enjoyed. If any of them are subbed and further rehabilitated, then that's an added happiness. 'Zhila-byla devochka' was one I nommed two years in a row, and that film about two girls during the siege of Leningrad was subtitled in a link-up between Angel and a friend of his. That film made the DtC list last year (or the year before?) after plenty of people over on ICMForum saw it and responded well. It's pleasing to have a little success story like that.

LOL

you know what helps? angel's letterboxd list and then hiding watched films, (dunno if you can do that with icm lists) what used to take me hours and hours took me 30 mins to rate this time. (maybe that's because i only had 285 to rate, pretty sure i had over 400 once)

i hate rating though, it goes in waves, i think i'm being too harsh so i get more generous and then regret that and then back again all the way down....and i totally forgot that 0 was an option

also i really want to watch some noms from the 30s & earlier but i've pretty much seen all i want to from there, so i keep ending up on the wrong side of the century.....i'll need a month of pure silent film to recover after this
