2013 Poll 2.0

Post by Evelyn Library P.I. »

Choose your favourite films from 2013 (according to IMDB).

Each person can vote for up to 20 films. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number.

Twenty-film ballots can be formatted as follows:
- Five tiers of four films each, 4/4/4/4/4; scored 5-4-3-2-1 pts/film/tier
- Four tiers of five films each, 5/5/5/5; scored 4.5-3.5-2.5-1.5 pts/film/tier
- Two tiers of ten films each, 10/10; scored 4-2 pts/film/tier
- No tiers, unranked; scored 3 pts/film
- A 20-film three-tier ballot is not possible

A tiered ballot can include less than 20 films, but in that case the total number of films must still be able to be factored by the number of tiers, so:
- A five tier ballot can include only 20, 15, 10, or 5 films
- A four tier ballot can include only 20, 16, 12, 8, or 4 films
- A three tier ballot (scored 5-3-1) can include only 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, or 3 films
- A two tier ballot can include only 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, or 2 films
- Ballots that are 19, 17, 13, 11, 7 or 1 films must be no tiers

Users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible, so that others can use them for recommendations. You may revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline.

Deadline for 2013 ballots will be Friday, March 31st at roughly midnight EDT.

my conversations on film - boris lehman

6.5 hours of blah blah blah lightened only by the sweet heart of dwoskin, the gestures of serge ouakine and the mischievous impishness of the two ancients rouch & mekas...(was robert kramer very very high or did he always talk like that?)

lacrau - joão vladimiro

oh my god. the images in this were totally gorgeous but i almost got hives from how repulsive the hippie 'spiritual journey' horseshit was. (as if capital-n Nature wasn't just as much an anthropomorphised artificial human construction as what it's opposed to, as if there's some simple, essential Being out there amongst the empty landscape that isn't just parasympathetic blessed relief from the permanent fight-or-flight impotence response from being surrounded by people (and a farm is pure machine)...ugh ugh ugh, i'm glad the director had a nice holiday but jesus)

i watched a few docs -

life is elsewhere (d. nicolas sanchez) nice images and convo with a couple of old men - one in the atacama desert and the other in tierra del fuego. lots of sheep

there will be some who will not fear even that void (d. saeed taji farouky) sci-fi-ish journey to the arctic. i fell asleep and missed the point if there was one

at berkeley (d. frederick wiseman) if college is this boring i'm glad i didn't go :p i do wonder what these people make of the current free speech furor. seems like things have gotten exponentially worse

One of two films I've watched which I perceived as smelling. So many nauseating moments. The other was during The Big Red One, if I remember rightly, there's a birth inside a military tank and a huge wheel of cheese

Highest tier at the top, 4 tiers of 3.

Upstream Color (2013 - Shane Carruth)
Inside Llewyn Davis (2013 - Joel and Ethan Coen)
Трудно быть богом / Trudno byt bogom / Hard to be a God (2013 - Aleksey German)

Under The Skin (2013 - Jonathan Glazer)
Nymphomaniac (2013 - Lars von Trier)
When Evening Falls on Bucharest or Metabolism (2013 - Corneliu Porumboiu)

Les rencontres d'après minuit / You and the Night (2013 - Yann Gonzalez)
A Field in England (2013 - Ben Wheatley)
The Canyons (2013 - Paul Schrader)

The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears (2013 - Hélène Cattet & Bruno Forzani)
The Bling Ring (2013 - Sofia Coppola)
Stoker (2013 - Chan-wook Park)

Interesting investigations from sally, would like to see that Lehman film, even if it's a lot of blah, those filmmakers are pretty chill.

I noted I am the only person who has brought up Upstream Color. Carruth was found guilty last year of violating a restraining order against his ex, Amy Seimetz, and also domestic battery. I think the film is neat and whilst I do often drop films from filmmakers if I find their art imitating nonconsensual parts of their lives, I didn't find that to be the case here.

Has James Franco been cancelled really hard? Cuz I can't think of an other reason why Sam Raimi could do a prequel to Wizard Of Oz... for Disney Studios... and it could sink without a trace. Watching it tonightish.

james franco has been cancelled really hard, not until a few years ago. but even at the peak of his career he was more a cult figure than a blockbuster leading man, and that movie had box office bomb written all over it, one of a number of bad idea attempts to chase the success of burton's awful alice in wonderland movies. i'm pretty sure there's an auteurist case to be made for the movie, but i can't remember what it is. and raimi is a director where his fans will passionately defend spiderman 3, quick & the dead, etc.

carruth's behavior definitely harmed the reputations of his two movies but i always felt they were on shaky ground to start with. upstream color's reputation would almost certainly be more settled if he'd made any of those large budget follow up projects, but given his behavior that is not likely to happen.
