In the flag of Uruguay, the Sun of May is the golden yellow sun bearing the human face and sixteen triangular rays that alternate between eight straight and eight wavy — alternating straight and wavy rays representing light and heat respectively.

Louis Lumière's invention was introduced to Uruguayan audiences on July 18, 1898, at the Salón Rouge, a popular local cabaret. Local businessman Félix Oliver purchased a camera and projector from the Lumiére brothers themselves — with them, he made Bicycle Race in the Arroyo Seco Velodrome, Uruguay's first film (the second film produced in Latin America).

if anyone is planning on accompanying uruguay with literature, i can recommend piano stories by felisberto hernández and the museum of useless efforts by cristinia peri rossi (although not sure if we'd class her as a spanish writer) which is all i've read of authors from there, and i've got mario levrero's empty words lined up to read as well which is probably the same amount of films i'm gonna find.

oh, i made a full promise to not buy any more books after an ill-advised bender in the spring (i had a gift certificate to a used bookshop, what is wrong with that?) but in all honesty things have gone wrong since then. the book overflow is mostly on the ottoman (crepax & hugo pratt collections i think) and coffee table (too many to list) but the moment in which the couch gets taken over is not too far away...

that said you should buy juan carlos onetti a dream come true. that's a great book!
