Polling the films of Jules Dassin
The rules:
- your list can include no more than half* of the Dassin films you've seen, up to a maximum of 8. So if you've seen 6 films, you can vote for 3, and if you've seen 20, you can vote for up to 8.
* If you've seen an odd number, you can round up when deciding the length of your ballot -- e.g if you've seen 7, you can vote for 4, and if you've seen 15, you can vote for the maximum of 8.
- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.
- deadline for ballots: next Tuesday, in seven days, whatever day that is

Don't know whether I'd recommend that one or not. It gets a lot of guff from some for its excess. It's closer to The Law than Thieves Highway, a bit lurid and over the top maybe, so not gonna appeal to everyone, but at least check out its nifty opening scene, that's worth a view if nothing else.

perhaps predictably, dassin's noirs dominate the top slots of our poll. none of his first seven features (mostly comedies and war films) got any support (1941's the tell-tale heart is a short), then 10 of the next 11 features he made, from 1947 through 1968, all got votes (the lone exception, perhaps surprisingly, was topkapi), and then his last four features got no support at all either.
results
1. Night and the City (1950) — 23 pts
2. Rififi (1955) — 18 pts
3. Thieves’ Highway (1949) — 14 pts
4. Brute Force (1947) — 11 pts
5. 10:30 PM Summer (1966) — 8 pts
6. The Law (1959) — 5 pts
7. Uptight (1968) — 4.3 pts
8. Never on Sunday (1960) — 3.5 pts
9. Phaedra (1962) — 3 pts
10. The Tell-Tale Heart (1941) — 2.1 pts
11. He Who Must Die (1957) — 2 pts
12. The Naked City (1948) — 1.5 pts
