SCFZ poll: James Whale

Post by flip »

Polling the films of James Whale

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half of the Whale films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Tuesday, in seven days, whatever day that is

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

and let's use extended rules:

• if you've seen an odd number, you can round up instead of down when deciding the length of your ballot
• if you've seen more than 10, you can vote for more than 5

I'm going to watch The Great Garrick for this - Rosenbaum included it on his alternative-to-AFI 100 and called it "the most neglected of James Whale’s better works"

i've tallied the results so far, but i'll leave this open at least until evelyn posts a ballot (unless you don't want to). new ballots would be helpful, at least from people who have seen several whale films, because we currently have a tie for first

Ah, I didn't get a chance for Garrick, so it'll just be:

1. The Bride of Frankenstein

Gonna try to watch at least one more to get the extra vote
are you planning to watch more and update your ballot? if so, that might be helpful because it could break the tie for 1st, but if not, i'll post the results once i hear back

Yeah, I'll try to finish off Sinners in Paradise tonight and add my last vote. Thanks for the reminder I'd forgotten about the Whale.

My list is updated and done.

much more often than not, the winners in our polls have been among the director's most famous films, but that was not (unless i'm under the wrong impression about whale's reception) the case in this poll.

we do have a tie for first, and so we'll need a tiebreaker vote to decide between the two top films - if anyone has seen both, please post your pick below. i doubt from the ballots that many people have seen both, and i can only infer one vote (rischka's) from the ballots above

results
1. The Great Garrick (1937) — 8.01 pts
2. One More River (1934) — 8 pts
3. Bride of Frankenstein (1935) — 6.5 pts
4. Waterloo Bridge (1931) — 6 pts
5. The Kiss Before the Mirror (1933) — 5 pts
5. The Invisible Man (1933) — 5 pts
5. Frankenstein (1931) — 5 pts
8. Show Boat (1936) — 4 pts
9. The Old Dark House (1932) — 3 pts
9. The Man in the Iron Mask (1939) — 3 pts
11. Green Hell (1940) — 1.5 pts

tiebreaker vote:

the great garrick
- rischka

one more river

since there have been no other votes in the tiebreaker, i'm declaring the great garrick the winner of our whale poll!
