SCFZ poll: John Sturges

Post by flip »

Polling the films of John Sturges.

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half of the John Sturges films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Sunday, in seven days, whatever day that is

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

i assume we won't need the extended rules for j sturges, but i might change my mind later if ballots are short, so there might be a chance to edit your ballot later on...

and a reminder: anyone can suggest our next poll. if you checked already on a director's views and want to poll that director next, just say so in this thread and we'll do that poll next. if you haven't checked views (and if there might be some question about views) then please just ask here, and if you find out the director has 10+ views from one person and 7+ from two others, then you can suggest that director for a poll any time you like.

As for anyone suggesting future directors... I feel like John Sayles would be a good one that hasn't yet been polled. I've seen all 18 of his features. So if others have seen a significant amount I'll take a count. (unless I'm going about this wrong, then someone please correct me.)

in case anyone missed it in the schlondorff thread, new system for nominating directors:

- if you want to nominate a director, ask in a poll thread about views, unless the director will obviously have enough
- you'll then need to check the replies. if a director has 10+ views from one person, and 7+ from two others, the director is eligible for a poll. your views count, so if you have 10, you just need to find two scfzers with 7 or more
- if the director meets those thresholds, then please post again to let me know you'd like to poll the director, and i'll add their name to the queue of upcoming polls
- probably best, if you nom someone, to wait a few polls before nominating again, unless there aren't many nominations, in which case feel free to nominate as often as you like!

Awesome. Looks like Sayles definitely has the numbers if you want to add him to the queue.

Ice Station Zebra
The Old Man and the Sea
The Great Escape
Marooned
Magnificent Seven

11 Sayles and I also still have a fair number of Hollywood directors with more than ten films seen, but don't know if they'll match up with anyone else or need be polled, except of course Ron Howard. Heh.

And as for adding new directors to the queue, I suggest Alan J. Pakula and Oliver Stone.

Seen 15 from Pakula and 20 from Stone.

Here's a few of the directors I can provide the 10+ from:

Robert Stevenson
Richard Wallace
Gordon Douglas
Delmer Daves
Stuart Rosenberg
Jack Arnold
Henry Levin
Phil Karlson
William Keighley
Victor Fleming
George Marshall
George Stevens
R Z Leonard
Norm Z McLeod
William Seiter
Rudolph Mate
Sam Wood
William Dieterle
Charles Vidor
Mark Sandrich
R. Mamoulian
Jean Negulesco
John Badham
Edward Dmytryk
James Ivory
Guy Hamilton
Arthur Penn
Martin Ritt
Richard Brooks
J.L. Thompson
Irving Cummings
Edmund Goulding
Robert Zemeckis
Jerry Lewis
Robert Benton
Daniel Petrie
Stanley Kramer
George Sidney
William Schaffner
both Reiners
John Landis
Mark Robson
Ang Lee
A Litvak
Henry Koster
Hal Ashby
Jack Smight
Michael Winner
Richard Thorpe
James Whale?
Geronimi, Luske, Etc. (Disney animated flick directors)
other major cartoon directors we haven't covered

There are undoubtedly more directors I missed that worked on enough Hollywood crap that could fit on the list as well or would have at least 8 to be some help

we've polled phil karlson, and i assume you mean franklin schaffner (not william). i have seen exactly 5 by a ton of those directors (and would watch more for a poll in most cases) but i can only be helpful with these, from whom i've seen:

7-9
Gordon Douglas
Delmer Daves
George Marshall
Rudolph Mate
Martin Ritt
Robert Zemeckis
Rob Reiner
John Landis
Anatole Litvak

10+
George Stevens

Yah, Franklin Schaffner, I get muddled on first names sometimes. Douglas and Daves are a couple I'd like to see polled as sorta faves, among a few others less likely to meet the limit, and the rest are directors I'm more interested in out of a sense of completeness than special fondness, even though most have at least a couple films I like, so I'd be happy to work with them too.

I can only help with these directors:

J. Lee Thompson - 19
Robert Zemeckis - 16
John Landis - 9
John Badham - 9
Rob Reiner - 8
Mark Robson - 8
Guy Hamilton - 8

Have seen 1-5 films from various directors from Greg's list. Some are among the directors I'm certainly eager to explore more, especially Martin Ritt (4).

Directors I can help with:

7 Arnold
8 Keighley
6 Fleming
8 Stevens
7 Seiter
6 Sandrich
7 Sidney
6 Litvak
7 Koster

For most of the pre-60s Hollywood names, I'd be happy to watch a few of their films for a poll.

Fine with me. Put him in a queue somewhere. I'll finally watch Nixon - the last remaining unseen film from Stone.

okay great, the queue is now:

john sayles
oliver stone
henry koster

i'm nominating henry koster, since he appears to have the views, and then if greg sees some of his other choices have enough views, he can nominate them any time. and of course anyone else is free to nominate too!
