SCFZ 2020 Academy Awards Poll

Post by flip »

The Academy Award nominations have been announced. For our never-very-popular annual Academy Awards poll, using the official nominations, you can vote in any category you like. The rules:

- if you have not seen at least half of the nominees in a category, you can't vote in that category, except in the Best Picture category
- for Best Pic, if you have seen 3, you can post a top one, if you have seen 4-5 films, you can post a top two, if you have seen 6-7 films, you can post a top three, and if you have seen all eight, you can post a top four. If you haven't seen 3, you cannot vote
- for the other categories, you can post a top two list if you have seen 3-4 films, or a top three if you have seen every nominee
- ballots must be ranked, scoring as in the poll above
- for any category that garners two or more ballots, I'll tally the results and we'll award the SCFZ alternative Oscars accordingly

nominees can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/93rd_Academy_Awards

i listed all the categories above, so feel free to copy/paste if it saves time!

and when will the academy do away with the gender divisions in acting categories? or is there a justification for preserving them? can a non-binary actor win an oscar?

i hate the oscars but still run this poll every year :)

My wife and I started the slog of trying to see as many nominated films as possible last night. Started with Pieces of a Woman which was the only one not yet seen that I had immediate access to. God, I hope it's all uphill from there. I'll watch more, so I'll definitely update my ballot, but that movie made me want to give up on the whole endeavor.

*Edit. I believe I've seen everything I'm going to get to before tomorrow night. Not really stoked about anything. Mank remains the most interesting film for investigation and the only one that seems to play with form in a remotely interesting way. Pleasantly surprised by Judas and the Black Messiah, but it remains a relatively typical historical/biographical piece for me except in its basic subject matter.

Best Picture (seen four)
1. Mank
2. Judas and the Black Messiah

Best Director (seen three)
1. Thomas Vinterberg

Best Actor (seen two)

Best Actress (seen three)
1. Viola Davis
2. Vanessa Kirby

Best Supporting Actor (seen three)
1, Daniel Kaluuya

Best Supporting Actress (seen one)

Best Original Screenplay (seen two)

Best Adapted Screenplay (seen one)

Best Animated Feature (seen zero)

Best International Feature (seen two)

Best Documentary Feature (seen one)

Best Documentary Short (seen zero)

Best Live Action Short (seen one)

Best Animated Short (seen zero)

Best Production Design (seen two)

Best Cinematography (seen four)
1. Nomadland
2. Mank

Best Costume Design (seen two)

Best Makeup and Hairstyling (seen two)

Best Original Score (seen two)

Best Original Song (seen one)

Best Sound (seen one)

Best Film Editing (seen two)

Best Visual Effects (seen zero)

I find this year's nominees to be both better than the average year and also totally uninspiring. I overall enjoyed Judas and the Black Messiah (and especially enjoyed Daniel Kauuya in it), but it had some real issues that I'm still trying to reconcile. That's easily the best of the Best Picture bunch for me, though I haven't yet seen The Father.

Best Picture (seen eight)

1. Judas and the Black Messiah
2. Sound of Metal
3. Minari
4. Nomadland

Best Director (seen five)

1. Thomas Vinterberg / Another Round
2. Lee Isaac Chung / Minari
3. David Fincher / Mank

Best Actor (seen five)

1. Riz Ahmed / Sound of Metal
2. Gary Oldman / Mank
3. Steven Yuen / Minari

Best Actress (seen five)

1. Frances McDormand / Nomadland
2. Andra Day / The United States vs Billie Holiday
3. Vanessa Kirby / Pieces of a Woman

Best Supporting Actor (seen five)

1. Daniel Kaluuya / Judas and the Black Messiah
2. Paul Raci / Sound of Metal
3. Leslie Odom Jr. / One Night in Miami...

Best Supporting Actress (seen five)

1. Amanda Seyfried / Mank
2. Maria Bakalova / Borat Subsequent Movie Film
3. Youn Yuh-jung / Minari

Best Original Screenplay (seen five)

1. Judas and the Black Messiah
2. Sound of Metal
3. Minari

(I have significant problems with the writing of all three of these movies)

Best Adapted Screenplay (seen five)

1. Borat Subsequent Movie Film (pretty sure this didn't have much of a screenplay)
2. One Night in Miami...
3. Nomadland

Best Animated Feature (seen five)

1. Wolfwalkers
2. Soul
3. A Shawn the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon

Best International Feature (seen four)

1. Another Round
2. Collective

Best Documentary Feature (seen five)

1. Time
2. Collective
3. Crip Camp

Best Documentary Short (seen one)

Best Live Action Short (seen zero)

Best Animated Short (seen two)

Best Production Design (seen five)

1. Mank
2. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
3. Tenet

Best Cinematography (seen five) (I hate this category this year)
1. Mank
2. News of the World
3. Nomadland

Best Costume Design (seen five)

1. Emma
2. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
3. Mank

Best Makeup and Hairstyling (seen five)

1. Emma
2. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
3. Mank

Best Original Score (seen five)
1. Soul
2. Minari
3. Da Five Bloods

Best Original Song (seen five)

1. "Husavik" / Eurovision

3. "Fight for You" / Judas and the Black Messiah

Best Sound (seen five)

1. Sound of Metal
2. Greyhound
3. Soul

Best Film Editing (seen five) (ugh)

1. The Trial of the Chicago 7
2. Sound of Metal
3. The Father

Best Visual Effects (seen four)

1. Tenet
2. The Midnight Sky

I never watch these but thought hey, maybe I will watch some this yr... there weren't that many 2020 movies, and these are mostly some easy watching business, but then I look up the runtimes. 126 minutes. 131 minutes. 119 minutes.

Whatever happened to good old 60-90 minute film? Remember the 20s? The Unknown, Laugh Clown Laugh, Lonesome, Berlin Symphony of a City, Man with a Movie Camera... now those were movies! Fucking dialogue ruined everything.

Wings was 145 minutes... so the run times might just be an Oscars thing.

I loved Emma. I have it and Another Round as the best of the nominees in any category, so far.

could see this being a fun exercise for some further back years where peeps have likely seen more, but i have seen literally nothing that's nominated this year, and actually haven't even heard of more than half of the titles. however, i do look forward to the laughably inevitable #oscarssoasian backlash that's sure to happen at some point down the road

I don't see myself voting, but I may watch the short films if I can find them. I just hope we don't choose the same best picture as the academy. That would depress me.

at least as of a week ago, the betting odds had nomadland a 3 to 1 favourite to win against the field (so if you bet $1 on all seven other nominees, you'd win an additional $3 if any of them won), so there's apparently an overwhelming favourite. we'll see, i'd bet on the field at those odds, but so far the prohibitive favourite is not faring well on the two ballots in this thread so far.

I have another existential question about awards and death. Are actors more likely to win an oscar if they portray a dying person or have a dead scene somewhere in the picture? I love how playing dead is seen as such a valuable skill for both actors and dogs, yet I'm not entirely sure this is the case or just a myth.

thanks to everyone who revived this and the best-of-2020 poll, deadline coming up soon! i'll be tallying these on saturday, though i'll likely be able to accommodate late ballots on sunday before the oscars start. it will be easiest for me though if everyone can plan to post their final ballot by friday.

i have a fair bit going on in real life at the moment, so i'm going to get back to the directors polls in about a week's time, rather than this week

okay... i am officially starting to tally this up in about ten minutes. so as usual, that means:

- new ballots are perfectly fine, i'll probably take them up until sunday morning montreal time
- but if you want to edit a ballot you posted above, please don't edit your post. instead, quote your old ballot in a new post (just the categories you've updated), along with your updated ballot, so i can see what's changed. edits also fine up until sunday morning.

thanks as always!

tallied everything so far, grabmymask -- i didn't count your votes in categories when you said you'd only seen 2 (you need to see 3+ to vote), but if you've now seen more, let me know. and in the later categories (product design, adapted script, sound) you're eligible to vote for 2 if you want to, but because for now i only counted votes 'above the line' on your ballot.

we also have three ties as far as things go right now, so if anyone wasn't inclined to go to the effort to vote, but has seen enough films to vote in any of these categories, those votes would help as a tiebreaker:

best actress
best supporting actress
best editing

i managed to break the ties in the acting categories by looking only at ballots from voters who had seen both of the tied performers, and then using just the ranking on those ballots to break the tie.

the problem is, in the editing category, there's a 3-way tie right now, and using the fairest tiebreaker, all three remain exactly tied. so if anyone wasn't planning to vote, but has seen some of the editing nominees, or if anyone wanted to edit their best editing rankings to break the tie, please post here! i don't know how else to break the tie, but i guess i'll look up the betting odds and rank the least favoured film first, failing any better method.

i'll announce results in about 3-5 hours, so last chance to post ballots or edit them!
