I just subtitled this film.
It's TFL now, but I placed it in Res. too.

Artistic testimony about life and death, in which raw shots from a hospital and the reflections of patients, doctors and nurses stimulate thinking on the (relative) meaning/pointlessness of life. The title of the film was taken from the poem of the same name by Vladimír Holan

Jiri maybe you could help me identify some Czechoslovakian stuff I've had chance to see as very young, in the 1980s.

First it was an animated short about a sparrow who entered a train wagon but then he couldn't get out after he overfeed himself.

The second was Hugo, something of a mudlark who walked barefoot, with torn trousers and greasy hair. (100% it was Bratislava studio)

Have you got any idea of these?

I dunno, it's character for sure but maybe even falls into title. It's possibly so obscure that no research would give any results, as Czechoslovak animation is a vast area. I'd say it was made around 1965 judging by style.

In cases like this, unless they open a YouTube channel (which relevant film studios tend to do more than before) I guess it's impossible to track it down.

Back in the 1980s-1990s, Belgrade TV stations had strange habit to show some films otherwise totally unknown in the original countries of production, but still interesting. For example, I twice watched a great Welsh film that Kenji didn't know about - and we weren't able to find it since. Also I watched several 1980s short family films made as a part of EBU dramas, which I clearly remember to this day.

this is "my" newest subbing contribution to the world of cinema.

preliminary side note:
it has to be mentioned i do "my" subs from only about 80 percent (to use the 80/20 Pareto principle).
after "finishing" subs, i send them out to a native speaker (who helped me to start subbing and is still willing to revise each of my subs).
i get the subs back (free of my shortcomings), i view the film again, and either a few more minor things are changed or nothing is changed at all, and subs go out.

this film is an adaption of the short story written by Ukrainian writer Yevhen Hutsalo (1937-1995)...

i didn't read the book but (based on the trivia i read) it seems the book's narrative is somewhat more lyrical than the film.
the story is transposed from Ukraine to Southern Bohemia (no clue to what degree the storyline was adjusted).

it is a graduation film by Zděněk Tyc released in the wrong time.
1990 was still a year of turmoil here (triggered by 1989 restoration of capitalism).
local filmgoers were still more preoccupied with politics than with going to the cinema and thus this film is practically unknown in Bohemia-Moravia-Silesia.
this was actually my main trigger for subtitling this (unknown) film — to promote a movie that suffered the adversity of fate.

because otherwise, i am at doubts to really recommend this film.
mainly because the characters are mostly despicable (you might feel "kill them all" if watching the film).
including the free-spirited uninhibited main protagonist who turns into an anti-poaching zealot (after being hired as a pond guard).

another trivia relates to the aforementioned hero of the film.
he is played by the son (Petr) of Miloš Forman.
Miloš Forman has begotten twins twice (i.e. two sets of twin boys).
(Petr Forman = face displayed on the stills above.)

a boy (suspected of poaching but actually just catching few frogs) is played by pre-adolescent/early-adolescent Radim Špaček — later local film director (notable is f.e. his "Walking Too Fast").

if to mention something that makes this film worth watching, then it is beautiful cinematography (taking full advantage of the South Bohemian landscape adorned with many ponds).
the footage is mostly underexposed and thus even the day scenes seem as if at/after sunset.
this graduation black&white film is a sort of exercise (somewhat late in 1990) to make a film in accordance with Czech New Wave esthetics.

speaking (in another thread) about weird objects found in graves reminds me...
Slovak filmmaker Fero Fenič made a few interesting short films (besides other more/less artistic undertakings).
One of them is HOW MR. KRÁĽOVIČ BECAME KING (1976) about a pensioner who in his spare time (i.e. all his time) takes part in archaeological excavations. It shows the graves with human & horse skeletons resting side by side.

The Avars were excellent horsemen, who were so close to their horses that they often had them buried with them in full harness and armour. This custom was adopted by the Slavs who lived near them (Štúrovo, Slovakia, eighth century).

Some films I'd recommend from East-Central Europe:

Heavenly Shift (Márk Bodzsár, 2013). Fun Hungarian comedy about an ambulance crew.

Ether (Krzysztof Zanussi, 2018). About medical experiments in the early 20th century.

On Body and Soul (Ildikó Enyedi, 2017). One of my favorite contemporary films. I think it deserved the Oscar that year instead of "A Fantastic Woman" which was fine, but nothing like this Hungarian masterpiece.

Protector (Marek Najbrt, 2009). Very stylish Czech film.

Music (Juraj Nvota, 2008). Musical film from Slovakia in a vein of the tale "Town Musicians of Bremen".

I Am (Dorota Kedzierzawska, 2005) and All That I Love (Jacek Borcuch, 2009) are two Polish films I fondly remember. The latter also features a great Polish actor Andrzej Chyra.

René (Helena Trestíková, 2008). Absorbing doc about a life-long criminal.

I Served the King of England (Jirí Menzel, 2006). My absolute favorite. I think I've already sung praises to this wonderful film here on SCFZ.

An excavation project by a team from the Institute of History of Material Civilization of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The excavation work was executed inside the Birkenau division of the Auschwitz concentration camp, at a site near the former 3rd crematorium. The objects that are being dug up are minor items for everyday use left behind by the people of various nationalities who were murdered in the camp.

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SCHWEIK (Sergei Yutkevich) is a creepy film (not in a good way).
Russian-made WW2 Schweik (joining Yugoslav partisans) has hardly anything to do with Hašek's WW1 supreme ironist & master of the absurd.
if you would be dying to see it, i can re-grab it and share it, however, i don't really recommend it (it is just a weird curiosity flick).

1/ CZECH SILENT CINEMA (1897-1930)

The miracle of motion pictures appeared in the Czech lands soon after its first major successful presentation by the Lumiére brothers in Paris. The first screenings took place in 1896 in Karlovy Vary and in Prague.

The first film in the country was made in 1897. It’s a record of a theatre performance of Passion plays in the town of Hořice, performed by local actors, called Hořický pašijový film. It was filmed by an American enterpreuner W. B. Hurd and his collaborator.

The first Czech film director and cinematographer was Jan Kříženecký, who since 1898 filmed short documentaries called “Newsreels”. Still in 1898, he made ​​three short films that are the first Czech feature films ever made.

The first woman in the history of Czech cinema, who passed the test and obtained authorisation to operate a movie projector was Mrs. Aloisie Kludská in 1902.

The first Czech permanent cinema house was founded by Viktor Ponrepo in 1907 in Prague.

Kinofa was the first professional film company on the territory of today’s Czech Republic engaged in the production of films. It was founded in 1911 by Antonín Pech. The other early Czech film companies were AB, ASUM, Electa Journal, Excelsior, Fortuna Film, Illusion, Lloyd Film, Lucerna Film, Moldavia Film, Ocean Film, Poja Film, Praga Film, Republic Film, Slavia Film, and Weteb.

The first documented attempt of Czech animation film is from the early 1920s, when Bohumil Šula created several sequences based on popular children’s book by Jan Karafiát called Broučci (Beetles). Completing the motion picture was thwarted due to author’s eye disease caused by demanding production technology.

Jan Kříženecký (1868-1921)

A pioneer and founder of the film in the Czech lands (and in the whole Austria-Hungary respectively). Jan Kříženecký was born on March 20th 1868 in Prague, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary (now Czech Republic).

After leaving his studies of architecture and engineering on Czech Technical University without graduating, he became employed as a technician-assistant (1897-1902), a building administrative officer (1902-1910) and a chief building comptroller (1910-1912) at the Construction Office of the City of Prague. Besides he became an avid photographer (he was a committee member of Prague’s Club of Amateur Photographers). Municipal Archives in Prague asked him to photograph memorable old houses, streets and other sights and monuments for the sake of their inventory. In the years 1902-1915 he took four thousand photos of old Prague.

In December 1896, he had the first opportunity to see “moving pictures” of Lumière brothers and he became fascinated. In May 1898, he bought the Lumière cinematographic apparatus and acquired several rolls of unexposed film. Together with his classmate from secondary school J. F. Pokorný, he founded the first Czech film production. All first films had the same length of seventeen meters and were shot with a static camera. Initially, he was sending negatives to Lyon, but later he started to develop them himself. The first films he had to develop in a bathtub and dry in the open air on the porch.

On June 19th 1898 at the Exhibition of Architecture and Engineering in Prague, he was for the first time screening (with great success) his first films, mostly scenes from the life of the city of Prague and news from the exhibition (VÝJEZD PARNÍ STŘÍKAČKY K OHNI, VÝJEV Z LÁZNÍ ŽOFÍNSKÝCH, PRŮVOD SOKOLSTVA, PÁTÝ VŠESOKOLSKÝ SLET, ÚTOK PRAŽSKÉHO DĚLOSTŘELECTVA, RYCHLOVLAK DO PODBABÍ, PRŮVOD KRÁLOVNIČEK, CYKLISTÉ). Those films were shown in a wooden hut, called Czech Cinematograph.

Still in 1898, he made ​​three short films that are the first Czech feature films ever made (DOSTAVENÍČKO VE MLÝNICI, SMÍCH A PLÁČ, VYSTAVNÍ PÁRKAŘ A LEPIČ PLAKÁTŮ). In these films played a major role popular singer and comedian Josef Šváb-Malostranský (1860-1932). He is now regarded as the first Czech film actor.

In subsequent years, in addition to still photography Jan Kříženecký focused solely on documentary film making. He captured f.e. the visit of Emperor Franz Joseph I. in Prague in 1900 and several annual Sokol’s rallies. Till 1908, he was the only one in Czech lands filming news and short films. Occasionally, he also lectured on the topic of cinema and was screening his early films.

As a cameraman he (probably) participated in shooting SEN STARÉHO MLÁDENCE (1910). For many years, he was listed as a director of this film. However, later it was discovered that the director and the author of the storyline is Moravian photographer Josef Křičenský (1874-1930). According to some sources even the claim that he shooted this film is not guaranteed.

Alongside carrying out his work at the office, in the evenings he was screening either his own, or someone else’s films in a variety of venues in Prague. Till the end of this pioneering era, when filmmaking was adopted by some other enthusiasts too, Jan Kříženecký gave up creating the movies and devoted himself to running the movie theaters. He ran cinema “Louvre” (1912-1914), cinema “Cinema” (1915-1916) and became a director in the movie theater “Elektra” (1918-1921).

Jan Kříženecký died on February 9th 1921 in Prague. He passed away (already somewhat forgotten) at a time when Czech cinema began to fully develop. Thanks to his endeavor, Czech lands became the sixth country in the world where film making started. In 1946, he received posthumously the title Pioneer of Czech cinema.

2/ CZECH EARLY SOUND CINEMA (1930-1933)

Sound was first used in Czechoslovakia in 1930 with the film “Tonka of the Gallows”. It was originally a silent film, which additionally has got its audio track. The first full-fledged sound film was “When the Strings Wailed” from the same year. Besides the arrival of sound, a crucial event of the early 1930s was the building of Barrandov Studios. A large film complex was constructed on the outskirts of Prague, and was at that time one of the most modernly equipped studios in Europe. The first film was made here in 1933.

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SCHWEIK (Sergei Yutkevich) is a creepy film (not in a good way).
Russian-made WW2 Schweik (joining Yugoslav partisans) has hardly anything to do with Hašek's WW1 supreme ironist & master of the absurd.
if you would be dying to see it, i can re-grab it and share it, however, i don't really recommend it (it is just a weird curiosity flick).

oh, i was planning on watching the yutkevich one anyway (i can find it thanks) but the one i was referring to above is:

i am aware that (after all my graphomania about plagiarism in the other thread) if i will present another mind-blowing detective story full of strange mysteries i won't be regarded any longer as a reliable source of information, but i can't resist sharing details about the enigma i am just solving...

1/ the other day, i finished subs to BE SURE TO BEHAVE, sent them out for proofreading by a native speaker and while i am waiting to receive them back revised i was thinking i will find what exactly says Amos Vogel about this film in his "Film as a Subversive Art" so i can copy-paste the quote later in this thread because i am planning to start here a Barnumesque campaign to propagate this extraordinary film.

2/ what he says about BE SURE TO BEHAVE i will tell later, but as i browsed through the chapter devoted to Eastern Europe i stumbled upon the following entry...

DEMONSTRATIONS (STRAHOV)
(Vera Chytilova, Czechoslavakia, 1966)
A unique document from Prague, this film is an illegally made documentary of the student demonstrations in Strahov for better living conditions and of their bloody suppression by the police. The interviews with student leaders, faculty, and hospital personnel were all at considerable risk to the participants. This first illegal work from the East (where all film production is controlled by the state) could, of course, have been made only by a film professional with ready access to 35mm cameras and collaborating laboratories.

3/ Strahov is a part of Prague where the student dormitory of Technical University is situated and thus Strahov was my dwelling place for 3 and half years while i studied on the Tech Uni in 1990s. With such a background and at the same time being a passionate cinephile (Chytilophile) i thought, "What the fuck is going on here?" because i never heard in my life about such a movie!

4/ so, i entered "Strahov" into čsfd (Czechoslovak film database) search engine and saw no results. so, i opened "Věra Chytilová" page and saw no "Strahov" entry.

5/ so, i entered "Strahov" into IMDb search engine and the result was a movie by Jan Němec called STRAHOVSKÁ DEMONSTRACE (STRAHOV DEMONSTATION) (1990) ... https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0174247/

6/ so, i returned back to čsfd, opened "Jan Němec" page and found entry STRAHOVSKÉ UDÁLOSTI (literally STRAHOV OCCURENCIES) aka THE STRAHOV DEMONSTRATION (1968), while the elaboration says the doc captures occurrences surrounding the student demonstration that took place on October 31st 1967.

8/ then i found a wiki entry about the event (i never heard about this demonstration — shoking!) that is only in Czech but says in sum the following...

"We want light! We want more light!" was the main slogan of the student demonstration that occurred on October 31st 1967.
Early autumn 1967 was very cold but Strahov student dormitories remained unheated.
Thus students (inventive bastards of the Tech Uni) started to manufacture DIY heating gadgets whose main ingredients were the heating coils taken from inside the irons.
Plugging these DIY heating devices into electric sockets started to cause regular blackouts in Strahov student dormitories.
At one point students (dwelling in cold and dark chambers) lost their temper and organized a "We want light! We want more light!" demonstration.
Regime (and its cops unit) overreacted, many students were heavily beaten and some students were kicked out of university.
However, the nasty details leaked into wider circulation, it triggered a public uproar, and representatives of the state and Communist Party were discredited.
This event is considered to be one of the key heralds (& triggers) of the upcoming Prague Spring of 1968.

9/ i made an extensive search about the aforementioned (acclaimed) film but to no avail (so far).
in any case, Amos Vogel is certainly wrong about the year 1966.
the event occurred in 1967, so the film is most likely from 1968 (and maybe in 1990 was slightly polished).
no clue if made by Věra Chytilová or Jan Němec (most likely by both — to what degree by Věra and to what degree by Jan might solve some future well-researched dissertation of some dedicated cinephile with a solid academic background — otherwise, i can imagine that some unscrupulous falsifier might come up with his/her ridiculous story about the authorship).

10/ hopefully, this film will emerge somewhere sometime.
