To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence.

This seems like the appropriate place to ask, and I suppose we can avoid delays if people plan in advance whom they'll pick. So: who's seen 8+ or 10+ Masaki Kobayashi flicks?

i’ve only got 5 kobayashi, provided the human condition counts for 3.

i had been thinking epstein, since wba and greenui mentioned him, but didn’t think enough people would have seen enough.

I'm good for ten views for most old school US directors including a lot of lesser known Hollywood types and a fair number of the traditional "foreign" directors who used to get the most notice back in the pre-internet era. For newer directors it's more limited and for "obscure" SCFZ faves I might not be much help.

i'm incredibly flummoxed by all this - i've seen hardly 8 by any director, even those whose films i've loved. and yet i don't think i've seen much less than everyone (part from ol greg) so what on earth have i been watching?

(i've got 9 epstein tho! but i'm not sure i could rank them)

I think many hardcore movie fans nowadays tend to choose movies based on who directed them, going through different bodies of work while alternating between directors of interest more than just sort of digging in based on availability and whim alone. Since SCFZ is a spin off from "The Auteurs" aka Mubi, I imagine that might be the case for a number of people here, though not everyone of course. being able to download whatever you want whenever you want ti changes things pretty dramatically, and I guess comedically too.

I am much more whim and availability driven myself.

Nobody has yet mentioned Anthony Mann. He's, like, a fucking huge player, right? I've seen 18, and gave 5 of them 4/5 or higher

I'd second a Shyamalan, but give Glass a few months to settle first because I'd be interested in seeing how it fares. I suspect the SCFZ crowd may have a bit of a controversial Shyamalan ranking, but we'll see.

I also support nrh's a-while-ago suggestion of a Mani Ratnam poll (I think I've seen 8 or 9 now so can easily watch one or two more to bring my count up to 10).

I also have 8+ views on:
Lav Diaz
Michael Mann
Stanley Kubrick
Andrei Tarkovsky
David Lynch
Jonas Mekas
The Coens

I'd be interested in seeing some more polls for experimentalists. I doubt we have a wide enough spread to poll anyone other than the greats; but surely we could manage polls for

Michael Snow
Takashi Ito
Ben Russell
Ben Rivers
Scott Barley
Shohei Imamura
and the like?

I assume we've already done a Benning? I vaguely remember voting in it.

we have done benning, yeah. imamura would be a great poll (i've seen ten), though i wouldn't group him in a list of experimentalists of the ilk of snow or ito.

Imamura would be swell, I mooted him as an possibility before, but wasn't sure if he had the views. And, yeah, not so much an experimentalist in the same vein as Snow and the others.

Nice! Soooo many filmmakers yet to poll.

Even if I merely look at my last Top 100 favorite filmmakers list I made in 2018, there's more than 50 of those we haven't yet polled.

I'm sure we can keep this going for great filmmakers with 10+ films for at least another 200 or 300 names.
