SCFZ poll: Marco Ferreri

Polling the films of director Marco Ferreri

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half of the Ferreri films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Tuesday, in seven days, whatever day that is

- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline up to three days, if someone requests an extension

- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: umbugbene, greennui, evelyn, bure, m arkadin

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward

if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate again

i have a feeling ferreri will be a director a few people have seen tons of films by, and many will have seen only a couple, so we'll use the extended rules:

- if you've seen an odd number of ferreri films, you can round up instead of down to determine the length of your ballot (if you've seen seven, you can vote for four instead of the usual three)

- if you've seen more than ten ferreri films, you can vote for more than five. so if you've seen 13, you can vote for up to seven. longer ballots will help ensure we can get to a top ten. i'll only count up to eight films from one ballot though (so you can list a top ten if you want, but #9 and #10 won't get any points)

I know Dillinger is almost guaranteed to win (and pretty deservedly imo) but I will attempt to catch up on a few others I haven't gotten to, and maybe adjust the ballot to push up another. But my preliminary ballot would be this.

Dillinger is Dead
Le Grand Bouffe

seen 7:
1-La Grande Bouffe (1973)
2- Dillinger Is Dead (1969)
3- Storie di ordinaria follia (1981)-good Bukowsky adaptation.
I think most of his films aged bad. Most of them not so funny like in 70-ies.

seen 12!

1. el cochecito (this is like the perfect sally movie, those black spanish comedies of berlanga, fernan-gomez etc)
la grande bouffe
el pisito
l'ultima donna (YES NAKED DEPARDIEU HAHAHA) (brave man)
the harem

not that keen on dillinger, seems to be ferreri's 'alienated young man' (sad penis hero) movie, but he made worse

oh! i have seen 4

el cochecito is divine. i even liked
la donna scimmia but i esp like lencho's review
Textbook-perfect illustration of the cultural-studies truism that imperialism and male chauvinism are two parallel manifestations of the single will-to-power that informs every flavor of oppression in the patriarchal playbook.
agree with sally re/dillinger. a pink polka dot gun? yes we get it

Would have been perfectly cast as a satyr in a Pasolini fantasy farce.

Seeking Asylum (just to annoy the anti-Benigni folks)
Dillinger is Dead (just because the only other two I've seen really were kinda annoying)

Am I right in thinking we haven't done Tarantino? Curious to see how that goes.

I wonder if Tarantino has enough films. He directed 9 films, 10 if you count Kill Bill as two films (Quentin himself counts it as one film) + a segment "The Man from Hollywood" from Four Rooms.

I guess it's up to Flip if 10 films are enough. I see that he also directed one episode of ER and two episodes of CSI, but I'm not sure if we count TV episodes.

oh yeah, we can definitely do tarantino, he has more than enough films (slightly!). i'll start that poll today.

don't think i can vote in this one cuz i've seen just one ferreri - dillinger is dead - even though i thought it was really great. suppose it caught me off guard cuz i knew absolutely nothing about it before going in, so in that way it'll be due for a rewatch at some point in the future to see if my appreciation holds up. think i've said this before, but it'd make an amazing double bill with jeanne dielman imo. not sure about sally and rawrkat's dissent, but that's ok. i just like cooking and listening to cool music, and occasionally i think about shooting my wife in the face (sarcasm obvs; please, don't ban me; or do; either way)

we have a tie for 1st, and possibly a surprise winner, depending how the tie breaks:

results

1. El Cochecito (1960) -- 12.0201 pts
2. La Grande Bouffe (1973) -- 12.02 pts
3. Dillinger is Dead (1969) -- 10 pts
4. The Harem (1967) -- 4 pts
4. The Conjugal Bed (1963) -- 4 pts
4. The Ape Woman (1964) -- 4 pts
7. The Seed of Man (1969) -- 3 pts
7. The Last Woman (1976) -- 3 pts
7. El Pisito (1959) -- 3 pts
10. Seeking Asylum (1979) -- 2 pts
11. Nitrate Base (1996) -- 1.1 pts
12. The Story of Piera (1983) -- 1 pt
12. Tales of Ordinary Madness (1981) -- 1 pt
14. Los Chicos (1959) -- 0.5 pts
15. Don't Touch the White Woman! (1974) -- 0.3 pts

el cochecito only appeared on three ballots, and it took first place on all three. to break the tie, we'll hold another vote. you can only vote if you've seen both la grande bouffe and el cochecito (aka 'the wheelchair'). from the ballots posted so far, i can only infer one vote:

el cochecito:
twodeadmagpies
brian d

la grande bouffe:
john ryan
ralch

if you've seen both films and want to vote in the tiebreaker, please post your pick below! i'm not expecting many votes, since el cochecito doesn't have many views overall.

i don't think there will be too many people who have seen both films, so i think i'll declare el cochecito the winner - not the film i thought would win this poll!
