To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence.

When you refine the TSPDT Top 1001 list down to the best films of this decade it lists:

The Tree of Life
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives
The Turin Horse
A Seperation
Nostalgia for the Light

What do you guys think?

I think the recognized best films on lists like TSPDT will change a lot over time as more movies get established as important and more voices are added to the polls from outside the usual places as is increasingly happening with polls overall. By this time next decade the list won't look anything like it does now as a wider range of movies will have found vocal supporters among movie enthusiasts as the internet continues to change the terrain and as movies themselves face new pressures from the online streaming world. This strikes me as an end of an era for movie appreciation, where some of the old will of course live on as important but new values will shift ideas of importance considerably.

I mean that's assuming there is still enough people alive with similar access to that we have now, with the current political trends and climate change, who knows if that'll be the case. Movie history might just end up being written by some guy clutching a grubby copy of the Videohound movie guide that he copies out for posterity just to have something to keep him busy in the ashes of our once vibrant civilization.

No doubt the timeless classics, and films that were ahead of their time, will be revealed down the track as perspectives change.

On the other hand maybe films that are in and of their time need to be seen when they're released to be fully appreciated. The fact that they might not be viewed as classics or one of the best films of their time down the track might just say more about changing perspectives rather than the inherent quality of the film itself.
Lost in cognitive dissonance.

Updated my list till November 2018. Still to add 16 titles from December, for a new record of 150+ newish films seen in a single year.
I'd say that's more than enough, as I had to endure a lot of bad and mediocre shit, which is usually waaay more than I can stand. Whats the point in watching films, if they aren't great? Right, there is no point in watching less than stellar movies. It's simply a waste of time.
To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence.
