SCFZ poll: Sergio Corbucci

Post by flip »

Polling the films of director Sergio Corbucci

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half of the Corbucci films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Tuesday, in seven days, whatever day that is

- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline up to three days, if someone requests an extension

- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: oscarwerner, greennui, mesnalty, bure, ofrene, arkheia, brian d, rischka, twodeadmagpies, john ryan, karl, umbugbene, greg x, wba, st gloede, evelyn, thoxans, roscoe, mrcarmady

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward

if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate again

I think I'll use the 'new rules' for this poll, since it wasn't clear if we had a lot of corbucci views

New Rules

Because Corbucci has fewer views than most directors we've polled, I'm changing some of the rules for this poll:

- if you have seen an odd number of Corbucci films, you can round up, when dividing by two, instead of down, to determine the length of your ballot. So if you have seen 7 Corbucci films, you can vote for 4 films (instead of 3). But please only vote for the additional film if you think it's deserving of a vote.

- if you have seen 11 or more Corbucci films, your ballot can extend beyond 5 films -- if you have seen 13, say, you can vote for up to 7 films. I'll award 0.5, 0.3 and 0.1 points to 6th, 7th and 8th ranked films (and nothing to 9th or later ranked films). Those additional votes will help to get a complete top ten.

Sorry, I didn't mean to give the impression that I've seen loads, I've seen 3 (really love the top one though) but will use this as an opportunity to watch one or two more.

I've seen 2 non-westerns, which were comedies with then popular Italian comedians, which I found amusing, but not outstanding.
But seeing as Corbucci was mainly a director of comedies and how most of his output is comprised of comedies, I'm sure there are some gems to be found.

And two of his westerns I've seen and enjoyed were comedies as well: "Sonny and Jed" and "The Mercenary" and as far as I know he's done a few more comedic westerns as well.

I'm well into a peplum of his called Son of Spartacus, AKA, The Slave (1962). It's very well-made of its type, so would recommend to fans of the genre.

Seen 11.
I think the main trademark of Sergio Corbucci are his violent spaghetti westerns:
1)Django (1966)
2)The Great Silence (1968)
3)The Mercenary (1968)
-------
4)The Slave (1962)-(Il figlio di Spartacus)-peplum
5)High Rollers (1976)-(Bluff storia di truffe e di imbroglioni)-retro comedy, A.Celentano.
Corbucci differs from other italian directors of that time, he didnt make other genre at the same level . He did peplums, he did many comedies and worked with Adriano Celentano. I will include one peplum and one comedy with Adriano Celentano-a remake of The Sting (1973).

if we tried ratnam before and didn't have the views, then unless some ratnam viewers post soon, it probably makes sense to go ahead with a richard lester poll, which will definitely work. i was hoping to start a poll today, so i'll probably do that.

i'm down to just go for lester - more people having seen more films should lead to more varied poll (at least in theory).

i think a lester poll should be interesting, so i'll start that up soon. the good news is, with my laxer viewership criteria, and with therude and greg's views, it seems likely we'd be able to hold a mani ratnam poll if there's just one more person with 6+ seen. so next round when you're nominating again we can check on that and probably poll ratnam too.

ooh, so i've seen 0 by corbucci, but it seems there's one film with toto and de sica, and and another with mastroianni and piccoli. i did not know he did films like that. so add in evelyn's peplum, and that's what i'm doing.

Django
Compañeros
Castle of Blood
Hot Fuzz

Seen seven or maybe eight, not really my thing, but they do tend to have their moments, unfortunately mixed with uglier elements, but there none the less.

i'll start stocking up on mani's in anticipation of a future poll. looks like there's a bunch available on prime, so i shouldn't have much trouble adding to my current total of four

Seen 3. Wanted to watch a few more, but don't think I'll have time after all. Going to watch a bundle of italian westerns this summer though, including the Corbucci's, Lord willing and weather permitting.

1. The Slave [aka Son of Spartacus] (1962)
2. The Great Silence (1968)

I prefer Great Silence to the peplum above, but I'd rather lend support to a lesser known pleasure.

according to wikipedia, corbucci directed just one scene in a 5th place-finishing film (castle of blood), but i guess we'll have results like that sometimes when we poll directors without a ton of views:

results

1. Django (1966) -- 23 pts
2. The Great Silence (1968) -- 16 pts
3. Companeros (1970) -- 10 pts
4. The Mercenary (1968) -- 6.5 pts
5. The Specialists (1969) -- 5 pts
5. Castle of Blood (1964) -- 5 pts
7. The Slave (1962) -- 4 pts
8. The Hellbenders (1967) -- 3 pts
9. High Rollers / The Con Artists (1976) -- 1 pt
9. Sonny and Jed (1972) -- 1 pt
9. Super Fuzz (1980) -- 1 pt
9. The Two Marshals (1961) -- 1 pt

Oh no! Too late! Was going to vote for the two marshals.

Thanks to this poll I discovered that corbucci did comedies and I love them (watched & liked another two as well)

I will be watching more corbucci
