i don't think the abyss is a great film, it's alright, but THAT scene transcends in sheer sexiness everything i've ever seen committed to film (to the screen is another story, one that involves a george osborne tv interview in a field in wales in 2015 that sublimely recalls genet's s&m, but that's probably just unique to me)


so for that, endlessly, there can be no other winner of 1910 other than asta's chasm, but i'll probably watch some more for it just for fun.

apparently i've seen some of the other 86 films griffith made in 1910 but i don't remember them so might as well watch (a few) again.

and www.stumfilm.dk has some from 1910, none of them have subtitles apart from the abyss, but they've all been restored and a recruit from 64 in particular is so pristine it looks like it was filmed yesterday, so i may watch them anyway.

Just watched three 1910 newsreels of suffragette demonstrations in England, I imagine others will be interested to see them as well. Titles: London. Suffragette Riots at Westminster; Mass Meeting of Suffragettes ; Suffragette Demonstration in London (June 1910) or Demonstration of Suffragettes (https://player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/wat ... 910-online). Some of the more heart-expanding footage I've ever seen.

It's kinda frustrating how little information there is about Piero Marelli online. His name on imdb is misspelled as 'Pietro' with a lot of questionable entries and Tripoli (1912) is attributed to him yet I can't find any conclusive proof about it.

Agreed, though, he's completely under the radar. There's not even an entry on him in Richard Abel's mammoth and authoritative Encyclopedia of Early Cinema!

1910 version of Vertigo, LE PORTRAITE OVALE, thought to be by Leonce Perret. Scotty/Madeleine/Judy is expressed in a way halfway between ETA Hoffman and Feuillade, so naturally I love the shit out of it.

Do I need to translate the title cards from the french to get this a wider audience? (Wouldn't take long, I reckon...) It rules.

incidentally, i don't think i'll vote for it, but i thought of you well watching La Tournee des Grand Ducs; it's a parody of French high society folks slumming it by going to a Parisian underworld dive to watch 'an Apache dance', which features a gal who looks rather like Asta Nielsen putting on a quite feral tortured love sub-dom show with her fella. all in good fun, of course.

Un matrimonio interplanetario (Italy) -- An Earth astronomer and a Mars astronomer fall in love and try to have a long-distance relationship through telegraphic media and Meliesian contraption magic. Rather sweet and has a sense of wonder. Well worth seeing (it's up on Vimeo).

OMG ! Harpodeon just posted a preview for a new 1910 film they've restored and added to their library: The Men Haters Club (Vitagraph), When a letter from another woman falls from her boyfriend's pocket, she and her friends form the Men Haters Club. Starring Florence Turner, Edith Storey, and Rose Tapley. I'm not a misandrist, but... I think I'll cough up the couple dollars for it now even though I expect it'll be spotlighted as a free now showing soon enough.

Sounds like a mirror-image of Griffy's The Newlyweds ,where a jilted fiance joins a woman-haters club. Seems to have been an idea that was 'in the air' somehow. There's also a western called The Woman-Hater, similar premise.
