I've got 4 Lupinos, 8 Von Stroheims, and 4 McLarens.

if it's not too late

seen 5

kokoro
an actor's revenge
alone on the pacific (it's bizarre how often i think of this film)

also, would have loved to do ingram, but instead i've added him to my 'directors to do 2020'

not enough for any of the further suggestions :(

Seen three:
Fires on the Plain
Kokoro

Seen heaps of MacLaren, love the dude, plus it would be super-easy for people to 'catch up' as they're all really short even by 'shorts' standards, so the exact opposite of Von Stroheim (from whom I've only seen Foolish Wives which I hardly remember)

I have 21 McLaren's.

(As for Lupino and Von Stroheim, neither one completed enough movies for a top ten, I believe?)

If there's not enough support for McLaren, I'll let someone else choose.

oh mclaren definitely works, let's do that!

it looks like von stroheim only directed nine films, two of which are lost, though he was uncredited on three others. so i think he'll only work when we move on to directors with smaller filmographies. the same is likely true for ida lupino unless there are people who have seen a lot of her tv work (though i doubt those tv episodes are on letterboxd, so posting a top ten there won't ever work for her).

WHERE THE HELL IS GREG THO
Sorry, I've just been busy lately and probably will be for the rest of the week or so. Too many things going on at once, like my workplace is being remodeled which means my job takes a lot more time to do in all the mess, which means I don't have much time to watch the 10s and 14s like I want to and other stuff that eating into my off time that should ease up soon.

with only three points (one third-place vote) separating the 1st and 5th place finishers, i think this must be our closest poll ever. interesting! i assumed everyone voting for the burmese harp was voting for the 1956 film, and not the 1985 remake (ichikawa directed both) -- if that wasn't the case, let me know

results

1. The Burmese Harp (1956) -- 19 pts
2. The Heart (1955) -- 17 pts
2. An Actor's Revenge (1963) -- 17 pts
2. Fires on the Plain (1959) -- 17 pts
5. Enjo / Conflagration (1958) -- 16 pts
6. The Makioka Sisters (1983) -- 10.5 pts
7. Tokyo Olympiad (1965) -- 5 pts
8. Ten Dark Women (1961) -- 3 pts
8. Odd Obsession (1959) -- 3 pts
10. Ototo / Younger Brother (1960) -- 2 pts
10. I Am a Cat (1975) -- 2 pts
10. 47 Ronin (1994) -- 2 pts
10. The Girl at Dojo Temple (1946) -- 2 pts
10. Ten Nights of Dreams (2006) -- 2 pts
15. Punishment Room (1956) -- 1.3 pts
16. Hakai / The Outcast (1962) -- 1 pt
16. Alone on the Pacific (1963) -- 1 pt
18. Being Two Isn't Easy (1962) -- 0.1 pts
