Films and Directors You'd Imagine You Would Like

The recent Theo Angelopoulos poll sparked this idea for a thread.

Are there any films you have yet to watch, or directors you have seen zero films from, that jump out at you as things you'll probably like, based on your taste and the little you do know about them?

For me, the list is long, as I have seen - relative to most people here - few films, so I'll just name a couple:

I've never seen a Grace Chang HK musical, I expect that'll be my thing. Rosenbaum touts Cy Endfield as a leftist B genre director, and I've got zilch from him. Who else? Hmmm....André De Toth, Stephanie Rothman, Eddie Romero, surely many others.

Rivette, Ruiz and Egoyan held that position for me from the time they first crossed my radar (in the 70s for Rivette...) until I finally started watching them. Now, I don't know if there are any... maybe some obscure 60s JNW figures that I've still seen zero by and not 1 or 2. Onur Unlu popped up out of nowhere last year and shook me till I rattled, based on seeing one (1) of his movies...

the biggest nightmare is when you see one movie by someone like jean-charles fitoussi or jose celestino campusano and adore it, only to find that everything else is either totally unavailable or subtitles are not available.

have barely seen any naruse, borzage, gavaldon or gosho. how have i never seen a movie by shinji somai? always wanted to finally watch arturo ripstein and all of marguerite duras. curious about leopoldo torre nilsson, even before he and beatriz guido kept showing up in what i was reading...

thanks, you just made me look at my watchlist (where i dump all the i-must-see-but-since-i'm-not-on-KG-i-can-go-whistle films that i absolutely long for) and now i'm depressed.

i don't know about films, or directors so much as i suspect there's a whole genre i would love more if i could get to see it, from when i discovered a spring for the thirsty and stone wedding and vedreba and then stumbled on a long-gone youtube channel of unsubbed mysterious cyrillic inky visions of things that promised a violently poetic heaven if only i could figure out what they were and understand the languages. the only one i retained any memory of was christo christov's iconostasis (which i still haven't been able to see) - but there seemed to be so many more outer soviet masterpieces haunting in obscurity. maybe there isn't and since the internet we know about them all...but maybe not...

The one Onur Unlu I loved was disappeared off youtube, but I see there's at least one other available via YT + opensubs. Maybe late tonight I'll do a thing involving one or both.

I've only seen two others, maybe someone else has an opinion. Rape Of T he Vampires was student-film avant goofiness and Grapes Of Death was a zombie crisis in French farm-country, almost a Brian-movie environment. I'd probably go with that one, but my endorsement isn't made with the roaringest enthusiasm.

The movie sometimes pops up in a Google search if you look for "иконостасът 1969," but I don't see it there just now. There's a Bulgarian movie channel on Youtube that used to have a nice copy of it but they took it down almost immediately, along with most of their other movies, about a year ago. Still might be worth following the channel in case they ever come back up. It's here:

Not much on there subtitled now, save that weird '90s remake of The Goat Horn, but there used to be plenty. I grabbed Iconostasis when it was up there, but alas that hard drive is kaput and so sayonara to plenty of my rarities and I can't help you. Anyway, some Bulgarian person subtitled it and a few other pics like Detour (Ostrovsky & Stoyanov) and Torrid Noon - which I put in Resources for the 1965 poll - so if you get a copy of the video you're in business.

Fascination is a good entry point, next would be The Nude Vampire or Requiem for a Vampire in order to get a taste of his offbeat, stripped down vampire films littered with his recurring obsessions (abandoned cemeteries, chateaux ruins, female doublets, the beach at Dieppe and so forth).

He was actually a "hard core" porn director. As far as I know he hasn't made any softcore erotic flics. Though he didn't seem to enjoy shooting those porn movies, denying he shot them, or saying it was just for the money.

As for his non-hardcore films, I think that all his stuff I've seen is great, but I especially love THE RAPE OF THE VAMPIRE (1968) and THE GRAPES OF DEATH (1978).
