Tenebre(1982). probably my favorite Argento thus far(didn't see much of him..), so much silly, guilty pleasure in it and liked almost every relentless killing scene. also that killer soundtrack!

I'm having a wallow in Corman/Castle era budgies, rewatches included... Carnival Of Souls, Teenagers From Outer Space, House On Haunted Hill... Planning on watching some things I need to catch up with; I'll be doing George Melford's alt. Dracula soon, The Witch That Came From The Sea and either Blood Feast or 2000 Maniacs.
Mostly underwhelmed with everything; Cronenberg's student film Stereo was interesting.

La main du diable (Maurice Tourneur, 1943) - Haunting Vichy-era horror, strongly recommended.
To add to my distaste for The Criterion CollectionTM, their logo eerily resembles that of the Nazi-funded Vichy-era film production company. Not a real criticism, obviously, but notable as a curiosity of film history, at least.

Threshold of the Void (Jean-François Davy, 1972) - Quite neat Polanski pastiche by a director that mostly dabbled in pornography. Very misleading poster on

The Addiction (Abel Ferrara, 1995) 7/10
Philosophical vampire tale in NYC presented to you by the man who dares to go into the darkest alleys of human condition - Mr. Abel Ferrara. He puts complete trust in Lili Taylor's screen presence and she confidently delivers while drawing blood and audience's attention at the same time. I'm not sure if I agree with all narrative choices made in the second half, but it would be interesting to revisit it after a few years and take a more distant look, away from the main character and observe the world that surrounds her.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Tobe Hooper, 1974) 5/10
Aside from some creative camera angles and a couple of already iconic shots, I don't see the appeal of this film. Neglected watching it for so many years, but it doesn't feel like anything special. There are some promising set-ups, like a "family" gathering at the end, but I just don't see it a highly lauded horror classic like others do.
The Descent (Neil Marshall, 2005) 6/10
Gory and scary claustrophobic thriller. Well crafted and genuinely inventive, though there are some cop-out decisions too. On the other hand, it's hardly avoidable on a relatively small budget film. I'm not sure about the casting. Too many similar looking faces for such a dimly lit film.

I watched Eye of the Devil this time last year and loved it. I think I initially rated it 7/10, but since it is one of the few films I still remember so vividly from last year's horror marathon, that I should at least hold it at 8/10 or just simply in a high regard. So many great scenes and that atmosphere of Gothic horror!

The Blair Witch Project (Daniel Myrick, Eduardo Sánchez, 1999) 3/10
Not much to say. For the most part - just pointless.
The People Under the Stairs (Wes Craven, 1991) 6/10
I'd say it was better than I initially anticipated. Absolutely loved the performance by Brandon Quintin Adams. One of the best child acting I've ever seen. Confident and very impressive. The story gets a little repetitive though. Might have benefited from another subplot. Wes Craven, as usual, is more well-versed in various set-ups than building a coherent story.
Mary Reilly (Stephen Frears, 1996) 6/10
Quality production with a great cast. Not sure if Frears understood how to engage with Dr. Jekyll's story, but charisma of lead actors helped to mildly cover it.

Wrong Turn was, actually, not bad, maybe even better than I anticipated. Stan Winston's special makeup effects standout as both creative and really creepy.
Madman, on the other chopped hand, is one of the worst slashers I've ever seen. It features some of the most ridiculous and laughable acting, even by the cheap slasher standards. The only memorable scene is the opening sequence about the back-story of Madman Marz.

Wow, thanks rischka! I love Burton's Batman and the aesthetics of this films lends beautifully to such a turnaround for a 20s picture and this looks like a great attempt to turn it into a silent film. Will give it a watch someday.

3. Split Second (Tony Maylam, 1992) 6/10

Both very cool movies.
In Split Second Rutger Hauer is a real badass, but a stand-out is a fun and bumbling sidekick played by Alastair Duncan.
Killer Party was funnier than I expected. A non-stop ride with plenty of laughs and thrills.

enjoyed rob zombie's the munsters a lot. the autobiographical reading is very charming but there is also something interesting here that ties in to a kind of american landscape of a kid who grew up watching horror trash on tv (reminds me of hearing from many people that the highlight of their nyc/nj thanksgiving was watching the king kong/son of kong/mighty joe young marathon on public tv).
i like the play with color, and the commitment to tone is impressive even if it might be a bit much. i don't always like zombies movies but kind of think this is one of his best.

The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970)
No screenshots because VLC is being troublesome, but heavens to Betsy. Never thought in a million years I could love a movie released in a post-60s decades this much. (I mean, it's 1970, but still.) Bava-style Gothic horror as perfect lesbian heartache. Just right balance of subtext with enough overtness to actually convey its queer meanings. New addition to my very favourite movies list, though you probably have to be a queer woman for its 'feels' to register as the genuine art I take it to be.

The Fog might not be Carpenter's best, but maybe one of the most beautiful horror film i've ever seen. completely fascinated by mysterious foggy atmosphere+_+
