SCFZ poll: Marcel Carne

Post by flip »

Polling the films of director Marcel Carne

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half of the Carne films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Tuesday, in seven days, whatever day that is

- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline three days, if someone requests an extension

- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: wba, greg x, ofrene, greennui, evelyn, bure, mesnalty, umbugbene

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward

if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate again

I love what I've seen of Carné! Seems like a director to discover and explore.

01. Children of Paradise (1945)
02. Juliette, or Key of Dreams (1951)

Carné seen: 4

Drole de Drame
Children of Paradise
Port of Shadows

Only seven Carné flicks so far, which was a touch less than I would have guessed. I'll try to watch one more before the deadline so as to not waste that extra half film and then vote for another.

in case l'herbier doesn't work, the only other two names that are coming to mind that might possibly get enough support are marguerite duras (17 for me) and jean rollin (12). if none of them do, then i'll let someone else take a gander.

I've seen only 7 L'Herbier and 6 Duras, but they're both long overdue. It pains me to think that the 9 Rollins I've seen will help him get in ahead of them.

I'll cast my ballot later. I'm doing a bit of re-watching to get the order right. Just finished re-watching Thérèse Raquin.

If anyone has the chance to check out Edward Baron Turk's book on Carné (Child of Paradise: Marcel Carné and the Golden Age of French Cinema), his chapter on Visiteurs du soir is some of the best film analysis I've ever read.

Hope I can help getting L'Herbier, seen 9.

(12 by Duras, 3 by Rollin)

Anyhow, I'm really happy Marcel Carné is finally up. I would argue he is the greatest director of classic French cinema (with competition from Renoir and Duvivier of course). Seen 17.

1. Children of Paradise
2. Drole de Drame
3. Port of Shadows
4. Le jour se leve
5. The Devil's Envoys

2. Children of Paradise (1945)
Those 2 were really solid for that time and i remember them. Somehow i wasn`t interested in later Carne works after WW2.
3. Les tricheurs-Youthful Sinners (1958)- i award this film, because when i saw it, it looked like begining of a new wave cinema. Far from very good movie, far from true great French new wave, but somehow close to it. Chabrol's Le Beau Serge (1958) -traditionally credited as the first New Wave feature- appeared at a similar time.

We still need a director for our next poll. I'd love to get one of brian's choices to work -- we'd need one more person who has seen 10+ Duras, two more who have seen 8+ L'Herbier or one more person who has seen 8+ Rollin. So if anyone has seen a lot of films by any of those three directors, please post here!

If none of those work by the end of today, we'll need a fallback option, and john, it would then be your turn to pick a director if you like!

since i haven't heard from any new rollin/l'herbier/duras viewers, and haven't heard from john, i'll open up the nominations further in the hope that i might get a new poll up by tomorrow. so roscoe - if you read this before john posts a nomination, you can pick our next director if you want to! if john posts first, we'll go with his pick.

but if someone posts with enough rollin/l'herbier/duras views before a new nomination comes in, we'll go with that director.

if we're doing cooper, i'm guessing we're going with him as a producer? cause it looks like he didn't direct many (but i've seen 9 that he produced). no bacons.

at least for now, we're only polling directors, so i don't think cooper (with only six credits on imdb) could work. i've only seen 3 bacon, but there are people here who might have seen 10+, so if he has enough views, we'll poll him.
