SCFZ poll: Anthony Asquith

Post by flip »

Polling the films of director Anthony Asquith

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half of the Asquith films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Tuesday, in seven days, whatever day that is

- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline three days, if someone requests an extension

- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: wba, greg x, ofrene, greennui, evelyn, bure

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward

if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate again

Seen 6:

Underground
The Importance of Being Earnest
Pygmalion

Also seen: The Browning Version, Shooting Stars and A Cottage on Dartmoor, ranked in that order, though the latter is certainly the strongest visually (arguably beaten by Underground).

Do we have enough views for Breillat (I've seen 11)?

we'd definitely need to check on breillat, since i think she's only made about a dozen features. if anyone has seen 8+ breillat films, please post here!

I have 11 Breillat also. Good choice since she sort of gets sidelined from major notice to some niche category for her singular approach, something that equivalently talented male directors, roughly speaking, don't seem to have happen, being seen as just directors.

I adore Breillat, but have only seen 5 of her films.

okay, i normally wait until people have seen enough films before starting a poll (and i'll probably do that in future), but because i asked late this week, and because there might be some other breillat completists we haven't heard from yet, i'll start that poll up, trusting that either brian will watch one more or that we have another viewer here who has seen 8+. thanks!

we didn't get a lot of votes in this poll, and as things stand, every film that got a vote made the top ten (four-way tie for tenth place). so i'll be happy to accept new ballots today, or edits to earlier-posted ballots, but if you edit your ballot, please make a new post where you quote your old ballot, so i know how to adjust the tally.

results

1. A Cottage on Dartmoor (1929) -- 18 pts
2. Underground (1928) -- 12 pts
3. The Importance of Being Earnest (1952) -- 11 pts
4. Pygmalion (1938) -- 9 pts
5. The Browning Version (1951) -- 7 pts
6. Cottage to Let (1941) -- 6 pts
7. The Yellow Rolls-Royce (1964) -- 4 pts
8. Orders to Kill (1958) -- 3 pts
9. The Demi-Paradise (1943) -- 2 pts
10. Shooting Stars (1928) -- 1 pt
10. We Dive at Dawn (1943) -- 1 pt
10. The Winslow Boy (1948) -- 1 pt
10. The Woman in Question (1950) -- 1 pt
