by Lencho of the Apes
Choose your favorite films from 1918 (according to IMDb).

– Each person votes for up to 20 movies. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number, if you're enthusiastic about fewer than twenty.
– Do not rank the films except the number 1, it gets two points..

Users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible so that others may use them for recommendations. You may, of course, revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline.

Ballots posted by people who do not participate in other parts of the forum will not be counted.

Next year will be announced early, on July 20.
Deadline for 1918 lists will be Thursday, Aug 1st at approximately 1 PM Pacific Time.

Only one favourite at press time: Lubitsch's Ich möchte kein Mann sein. Understand why it wouldn't work for many people, but personally I find it heartwrenchingly and affirmingly resonant with (my) (trans)gender experience. Will try to watch several others and see what strikes my fancy :) !

italian cinema double feature w/dir. amleto palermi. first up is a feuillade like serial adventure called il gioiello di khama

Image

our hero who i refer to as old deniro, plays a dual role as eccentric millionaire and bohemian painter, allowing him to trade places with himself

Image

it seems an angry indian cult is after him for stealing a jewel from their idol or some nonsense, with dastardly methods including trying to make him die of thirst

Image

it's all a bit silly but occasionally fun. there's a marked lack of lyda borelli

more than made up for with our second feature, carnevalesca

Image

life is apparently a carnival for carefree aristocrats

Image

unless you're meeting someone unsuitable on the sly or

Image

fighting your siblings over the inheritance, you might even

Image

accidentally stab someone while in the throes of passion. if you were lyda borelli

Image

not as much fun as malombra but better than il gioiello with a few striking compositions. and lyda borelli ofc

1918 isn't yet the year that I can start taking movies seriously, but it has its minor charms, not the least of which is Les enfants de France et de la guerre (Henri Desfontaines). The title says it all. Interesting for its documentary scenes and its lovely lighting.

Next up: One or two by Ingmar Bergman's favorite forgotten pioneer of the Swedish screen, Georg af Klercker.

Father Sergius
I Don't Want to Be a Man
Shoulder Arms
Be Silent, My Sorrow, Be Silent (Pyotr Chardynin)

Two things from 1918 worthy of a quick mention:

Hell Bent - John Ford. The pictorial sense that guided Ford's use of landscape is already very well-developed here, some striking, magical shots... fighting against a sorta silly hero vs badhats story.

Bud's Recuits - King Vidor. Super-early Vidor, but already very competent in his film grammar, and an interesting editorializing stance behind the narrative that *could* easily be read as pacifist/anti-military. Not but a featurette, 25 or 30 minutes long.

Didn't get to explore '18 after all, as '12 was more than enough depths-to-plumb for yours truly. Only seen ten 1918 films, then. Voting for one of the great Berlin Lubitschs and then a couple Liberty Bond shorts. To be clear, I'm staunchly opposed to the political mission of the Liberty Bond shorts, I just find them historically interesting and well-made for what they are.

1. I Don't Want to Be a Man (Lubitsch)
- One Hundred Percent American (Pickford)
- The Bond (Chaplin)

Oh, no, Rischka, no, no. That was MY final thing, not the aggregated final thing of todos. The aggregated final thing of todos will come this afternoon.

That list will probably be even shorter than this one, unless I include everything that got one (1) vote.
