what did you listen to last month?

Post by wba »

as I've started listening more regularly (and more concentrated) to music again, I figured why don't we have a thread like "what did you read last month?" or "what did you watch last month?" for music as well?

I will list mostly albums and complations and the like, but feel free to list whatever you like however you like it.

Just please don't post youtube videos or such stuff (this is not the "what are you currently listening to" thread). If somebody wants to find something, that person can probably google it or something. ;)

Albums:

Flying Lotus - Flamagra (2019) : Took a while but it has grown on me a lot.
Quasimoto - The Unseen (2000) : The GOAT bona fide classic and so forth.
Raveena - Lucid (2019) : So goddamn smooth.
Bibio - Ribbons (2019) : Pastoral chill.

Songs:

Tom Waits - Ruby's Arms : It's been stuck in my head ever since watching it being used in Godard's Prénom Carmen.
Nujabes - Shiki No Uta : I went to Japan last month and listened to this one a lot on beforehand in order to get in the mood.
Kate Bush - Sexual Healing : Pure sex.
Nicholas Britell - Agape : From the If Beale Street Could Talk OST. I thought the movie was only so-so but this track has stuck with me.

feel like my listening is almost totally split between sitting with records at home and jumping around with a lot of different stuff (much of it very new) through streaming at work. modern streaming services are great for lots of reasons but can feel a little scattered at times.

home -
pacific breeze - japanese pop, aor & boogie 1976-1986
pacific - haruomi hosono, shigeru suzuki & tatsuro yamashita
the Aegean Sea - haruomi hosono, takahiko ishikawa & masataka matsutoya
2lp asakawa maki collection from honest jon’s label
solla solla - ilaiyaraaja
ilectro - ilaiyaraaja

Streaming -
s/t - lô borges
clube da esquina- milton nascimiento
miracle in the night - John southworth
proto - holly herndon
psychedelic sanza (1982-1984) - francis bebeye
and because it’s summertime a weird mix of 70s reggae and outlaw country.

I love Madvillain but at the same time I kinda wish they never do another album. I'm looking forward to Madlib's new album with Freddie Gibbs later this month, it's been a looong wait.

Found myself listening to quite a bit of ambient music this month. Brian Eno's New Space Music (very soothing), Hiroshi Yoshimura's Wet Land (soft melodies and lush arrangements), and Takao Naoi's Vibration Pulsar (deep bass tones bubbling underneath wandering guitar picking). Apart from that, browsing singles by recent rap artists like ThouxanbandFauni (Flexin) and UnoTheActivist (Parkin' Lot Pimpin', which samples the classic Kerri Chandler track Rain).

just started listening to some of the new king princess album, not sure if i'm into it, might be overproduced, 1950 was one of the best songs i heard last year though so i'll give it a chance.
