New forum, new stats!!

Welcome to the first Letterboxd Actor Showdown: jimmy Stewart versus John Wayne

How does it work?
I'll use my dark magic powers to read data from the letterboxd accounts of SCFZ champs. I'll then use this data to answer the questions that have been keeping you all up at night: Which Stewart/Wayne movie was highest rated by champs? Which was rated lowest-rated? Which champ has seen the most from Wayne or Stewart? ETC.

When will I do this?
Next Friday December 21 of the year 2018.

What do you need to do?
Go to your letterboxd account. Rate/log Stewart and Wayne movies you've seen.

Who's Playing?
Here are the Letterboxd champs in my records. If you do not see your name, let me know and I'll add you. If you see your name and are outraged, let me know and I'll take it off.

Letterboxd lists 195 John Wayne movies and 123 Stewart movies. I'm quite sure a lot of these may be skipped (say for example a 30 minute TV special about John Ford where Wayne pops up for 30 seconds). If you see such titles that I can remove, let me know.

If you sort by popularity, it looks like the line that has Raquel! and everything after could probably be skipped for Wayne unless Punq or David Burgess are in on the poll. Those movies have less than 8 viewers registered with ratings. A lot above that are pretty iffy too, but there is the occasional rating by people I follow who may be SCFZers. I didn't check too closely.

With Stewart, James Stewart's Wonderful Life and everything after except, I guess, Green Horizons can also probably be skipped.

Unless of course you want to be an absolute completist and list every actual movie each were in.

The only two that I'd say you should remove for Jimbo are Winning Your Wings (short military recruitment film from 1942) and, as mentioned, A Wonderful Life

Everything else I have logged for these two showcases their acting

Also, what would be funnier: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance winning for both of these guys, or said film winning for one of these guys with the other guy having a higher-rated flick in his filmography?

My records tell me that 30 champs have rated at least one movie starring Wayne or Stewart. As a reminder, in the ultimate showdown, each champ gets one vote: Your vote goes to the actor whose movies you gave a higher average rating to. If you gave both actors the same average rating or you're one of those people who don't believe in rating, your vote goes to no one.

Place your bets! Here are the questions - answer as many as you want:

1. How wins? Wayne or Stewart? What's the final score?
2. What Wayne movie did champs rate the highest?
3. What Stewart movie did champs rate the highest?
4. Which champ has the seen the most Wayne movies? How many did said champ see?
5. Which champ has the seen the most Stewart movies? How many did said champ see?

The winner gets to pick the next showdown. The winner will be selected based on a super complicated mathematical formula I have not derived yet.

Stewart 20 - Wayne 10

Would it maybe be easier to adjudge the winner if, instead of, e.g., "Stewart 20 - Wayne 10", I submitted my guess as Stewart +10? Covering S20-W10, but also S19W9, S18W8, etc. In cases in which some people's logs don't produce winners and it's not out of 30, it's then much easier to determine which guess was closest

It's how chess is generally bet or predicted on, because of the high rates of draws. A 12 game match might be won 2-1, with 9 draws, and that would just be called +1. Going 7-6 with one draw is considered the same bet.

Fuck I can't add 7+6+1 and I've been quoted, it's too late

TBF I had three exams this week and my brain might have done all the work it can do for the next little while

@kanafani , you can count me out of this one. I love these stats showdowns, but so far I have stayed away from John Wayne. Maybe one day I can forget how I judge him as a person and try seeing some of his films. Maybe.. :?

Might not want to dig into the histories of a lot of old stars, Stewart and Grant included. Many of them aren't what I'd call role models, to be nice about it.

I agree that not all of them were role models. And sometimes I too overlook their personas for the sake of interesting films. For example, Charlton Heston. As I see him, a despicable human(?) being, but I still have seen about 10 films with him, simply because some of those were too important to miss (Ben-Hur, Touch of Evil, Planet of the Apes). And Heston is one of the worst actors that I know of.

Re: Letterboxd Stats showdown: jimmy Stewart / John Wayne

History isn't quite so neat as that, Heston was on the front lines for the fight over civil rights for blacks among other things good and bad.

Image

I think even the best of us hold the roles actors play as somehow more representative of the people playing the roles than we should, chalking up positive vibes for those who play open minded types and more negative vibes for those who play close minded or authoritarian roles, like Heston and Wayne. Celebrity is an abomination but one almost impossible to avoid in our cultures.

it took me quite awhile to overcome my wayne aversion but it was very much worth it

that's a great photo above, makes one almost remember what it felt like to be proud of this country

i think stewart will win this though. i'll go 18-12

Stewart should win, by talent, but I'm gonna bet Wayne under the assumption more of his lesser works have been skipped than Stewart's and give him a 17-13 nod. (As much just to have some vote go Wayne's way)

Wayne: The Man Who
Stewart: Shot Liberty Valance

Probably me

If there is time, you can add me to the list. I don't have much updated on Letterbox, only what I´ve watched the last 2 years and a half.
